To worry about a single palm crease on newborn??

I don't know if I'm over- worrying, but my new baby has a single palm crease on his right hand. They mentioned it at birth but I didn't think much of it then.

Googled it now and it can be linked to absolutely loads of genetic disorders!?! My husband thinks I'm worrying about nothing, and that it's silly to sit here reading about the potential conditions.

Has anyone else had this and been absolutely fine?? I wish I had my husbands chill!

Baby seems perfect in every other way

I have a single palm crease across my left hand. Never commented on by any medical professional. I only know because I noticed it myself as an adult. I have a postgrad and am very healthy overall. Hope that helps.

I have a single palm crease on my left hand. As far as I know, that doesn’t mean anything for me, other than it’s a little unusual.

Mysteryuser · 22/06/2022 20:22

My DDad has this. He has two masters degrees and was a uni lecturer. Please try not to worry.

Satsumaonaplate · 22/06/2022 20:23

It's good to hear that it can be normal! Thank you. We had a scare with my first pregnancy (turned out to be nothing) but I'm a bit wary of spotting anything unusual in my babies now!

Some people with genetic disorders have a single palm crease.

Some people without a genetic condition have a single palm crease.

In a well child who is developing normally, it's of no significance at all.

Step away from Google and enjoy your baby.

Lunaboo · 22/06/2022 20:24

I'm a midwife, single palmar creases are only concerning in conjunction with other signs/symptoms of syndromes and these would have been picked up on a newborn physical examination before discharge. Lots of people only have one, don't worry about it and enjoy your baby! 💐

Thank you! Yes I am going to reimpose my "never Google anything medical" ban effective immediately...

I look at newborns as part of my job. We are more concerned about single palmar creases on both hands and even then that can be fine if no other concerning factors. Please don’t worry

toohottoeat · 22/06/2022 20:27

Doesn't Robert de Niro have a single palm crease?

titchy · 22/06/2022 20:28

Tony Blair has one!

I have one on my left hand, dc1's is on right hand and dc2's in both hands (as well as a few other v minor markers). We're all graduates!

Satsumaonaplate · 22/06/2022 20:29

Good to hear from people who inspect newborns, thank you - I'm able to enjoy my evening now (and my husband is looking at me like "I told you so...") 🙈

Did you read the wiki entry? Very reassuring. 1.5% of the population has this, it's more common in boys and it's not predictive of any other condition.

SilverGlassHare · 22/06/2022 20:31

It is a soft marker for a number of syndromes and genetic conditions, yes. But it is also a normal variant. Keep an eye on your DC’s development and try not to worry about it too much.

Cdl84 · 22/06/2022 20:33

My ds has two single palmar creases. No one else in damily does. Not mentioned at the early checks, and I only noticed at 3 months. He was a slow developer (late rolling, crawling etc) and I became increasingly worried it was a sign of something else (despite being in medical profession and knowing that I should know bettet). Everything has turned out fine (nearly 3 yo now and more than meeting milestones). It did make me worry unnecessarily and I wish I had never noticed it! I was advised there would be clear signs of other genetic issues if they were present, and that a single palmar crease is much more likely to be a normal variant.

Thank you! We were told by fetal medicine to watch my DDs development too (nothing spotted yet!) for a different reason, so I guess I'll just keep an eye out for anything unusual with both kids as they grow

My ds has a single on both hands and is a teenager with no health issues

SMBC2020 · 22/06/2022 20:35

I have this on one hand. I have a masters and no genetic condition. I've never actually checked DD but I will once she's awake.

Lhiurvhcf · 22/06/2022 20:37

I've just checked my hands and I thought I had a single crease but uts actually a suwon crease which apparently means a high agreeableness and IQ 😆

Luckystar1 · 22/06/2022 20:37

My middle child has a single palmar line on one hand. I admit, I too went down the rabbit hole of googling when she was a baby. She’s nearly 6 and she is perfect. Clever, kind, funny (over dramatic…).

I hope this is even slightly reassuring!

gamerchick · 22/06/2022 20:41

My youngest has the Simian lines on both hands. He's physically healthy. Has ASD though but that's probably coincidental.
