To take a buggy on holiday for nearly 4yr old DD

Hi all,

We are going away in a couple of days and I am undecided on weather to take the buggy. We last went away with DD when she was around 18 months and it was god send. We didn't have to be back in the room for her nap, I didn't have to carry a changing bag and we could stay out past her bedtime.

This time she is obviously older but I am still thinking about taking it, it's meant to be around 33 degrees in the day time and although she isn't a bad walker, I still think she will find it tough. There is also a hope that she will nap in the buggy. Also with the queues at the airport at the moment I think it will be a bit easier.

Aibu?

Depends how much walking you're expecting to do but if you are concerned that the amount of walking you want to do, in the heat, may be difficult for her then I would definitely take it. My eldest has just turned 4 and is a fairly good walker, we were away for a few days recently and we have an 8 mo and don't have double, nor did we have boot space to take two pushchairs. However we did a beach trip and a zoo trip and on both of those when the baby was being carried around because he was fed up of the buggy, sometimes my eldest would sit in it and be pushed around a bit as she was tired.

I took one for a city break when my daughter was over 3.5. Apart from being ill it was the last time we used it, but used it every day. Out 12 hours a day and walking miles. It probably depends on type of holiday.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/06/2022 17:56

100% take it.

ladydimitrescu · 22/06/2022 17:58

I take one to Disneyland for my 5 year old, the walking is insane! Definitely do it!

ChocolateHippo · 22/06/2022 18:04

Take it, unless you're planning to do very little walking or you don't mind lugging her around on your shoulders.

It's amazing how tired/moany being on holiday in the hot weather makes them, and you really don't want to end up limited to within a few hundred metres of your hotel.

HillyBillyBob · 22/06/2022 18:06

Take the buggy!!!

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 22/06/2022 18:11

Absolutely take it!

JuneJubilee · 22/06/2022 18:23

Take the buggy. You'd be mad not to!!

hope you have a great time!!

MadeForThis · 22/06/2022 18:30

I'm bring our double buggy for our DD's aged 4 and 6. They haven't been in a buggy for close to 2 years but it's too hot during the summer and I'm not carrying them.

The airline let us check it in with the suitcase as we won't need it in the airport. But at least we can use it for longer walks. Dd6 will squeeze herself in I hope. The sun shade and a few mins rest will be a lifesaver.

Roselilly36 · 22/06/2022 18:31

Handy for the airport too, I would have thought. Yes take it.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 22/06/2022 18:41

Totally take it. It's a holiday, having the buggy as at least an option will allow you to relax and enjoy it. I'm pleasantly surprised to see the thread pretty much unanimous on this point!

A PP asked about buggies which fit - my very average sized 4yo still fits in the bugaboo bee and also in a cheapo umbrella fold I bought for a holiday this year (her feet do reach the floor in the latter, but she's comfortable enough if she keeps them on the foot rest!)

Greengr · 22/06/2022 18:46

Without a shadow of a doubt
Plus hand for carrying stuff!
Enjoy your holiday

bellsbuss · 22/06/2022 18:47

Take it, I used to take one for mine up to the age of 5. Didn't ever use it a lot but was always glad we had it.

We went away last year with our nearly four year old and took the buggy. She still napped in an afternoon because of the heat and it really helped on an evening if we wanted to stay up with her brother

idontevenknowanyonecalledblurb · 22/06/2022 18:48

Oh and I still miss it for carrying stuff!! So useful

SaundersE126 · 22/06/2022 19:28

Thanks for the responses, I think I am definitely going to take it with us. We tried her in it again this evening when we went for a little walk and it was absolutely fine. Fingers crossed she will nap in it especially at night so we can stay out for a few extra hours. It lays flat and the hood comes over so she will be protected from the sun as well.

The beauty of a buggy is when they drop off to sleep in the evening and you can enjoy a
Relaxed evening out

Youdoyoutoday · 22/06/2022 21:34

Just take it, rather have and not need than need and not have!!

Bunnycat101 · 22/06/2022 21:39

I’d take it if only for the airport. With the travel chaos over half term, we’d have been screwed without it for our 3yo who doesn’t use the buggy normally. If you’re standing in a 2 hour queue, it’ll be significantly easier if you can let the little ones have a nap or sit down.

CrabbyCat · 22/06/2022 21:41

I have a Baby Jogger City Mini GT, they have a very tall seat. My tall 7 year old DC1 still occasionally steals a brief seat in it, his head doesn't fit under the hood but if folds back completely out the way. DC2 still fits in it properly at 5. In the EU, it's only weight tested to 15 kg so that is the limit It's sold with here - but the US is the same model and there it is rated to 65 lbs / 29.5 kg. I'd guess there are other similar buggies.

UndertheCedartree · 22/06/2022 21:41

Definitely take it!

Soontobe60 · 22/06/2022 21:41

SaundersE126 · 22/06/2022 16:03

We used it the other month for a wedding so thankfully she still fits in it, even when it's flat.

Then take it… even if its only used as a bag carrier 😂

Eileen101 · 22/06/2022 21:42

Definitely take it! My 4 y o napped every day in our double pushchair along with the 2 y o when we went on holiday recently. I was glad of having put it in the car!

Darbs76 · 22/06/2022 21:45

I’d take it.

FoxtrotSkarloey · 22/06/2022 21:47

We've just taken ours for DS who is four next month. It's so useful for when you want to go places at your pace or don't want them to zig zag or wander off.

Also for when they get hot/tires/moody/naughty.

And handy to pop water and bags in the bottom.
