To think DS sports day was odd and not really in the spirit of inclusion?

Me and DH and DM attended DS sports day yesterday
it was very hot and it wasn’t set out like a traditional sports day I.e activities each team goes round
mall kids were seated , activities did happen but certain kids from each team were read out and all other kids remained seated , there were children who took part in multiple races , and some none my son did 1! Being stood in a sun trap for over 2 hours to see him do one race at the end 😡

like I said some kids did nothing,

I asked him and he said teachers asked kids which ones they wanted to do instead

AIBU to think the whole point of SD is that everyone takes part??

I agree though, there are loads of parents who do fuck all for exercise themselves and their kids are also far more sedentary than they ought to be at their age. Schools can help to break this cycle by making exercise inclusive and fun.

It's about races, shot putt, long jump, sports, not an 'egg and spoon race' (that I have never seen at any school I've been at or my kids went to).

Are you talking primary or secondary?

As a one off day or all year round pe?

That's what PE lessons are for.

And also sports day, which is usually fun for most children in primary school.

PurpleDaisies · 22/06/2022 19:30

I think you’re out of date with what most primaries are doing for their sports days @Lola4321 Egg and spoon race is a key event!

There are no fun events at all at all your local primaries? That’s quite unusual.

Rosehugger · 22/06/2022 19:32

Neither are school trips or school plays "necessary" but a lot of kids look forward to these days to break up the monotony.

I didn't say there were no fun events at all, just that there isn't any "egg and spoon races" at any of the primary schools in my local area that I'm involved in/know of.
The picture you’d painted was of only serious athletic events at both primary and secondary. That was what I was wanting to clarify.

What’s a typical primary sports day like near you?

@Lola4321 it sends out the message exercise is optional, it isn't.

No it doesn't.

That message comes from other areas of education much as PDL/PSHE.

Competing for a team under duress doesn't it each anything at her than your self esteem
Doesn't matter.

My ds was (is!) terrible at any sports that require balance and Co ordinations. He has a rare neurological condition as well as being autistic.

However he trains 21 hours a week at his sport. He's elected level and national champion more than once.

Sports day made him question his abilities. Caring people and the support I have him at home made him see he could do something and to find what he can do and enjoys and not to feel useless because of what he can't do.

Exercise is not 1 sports day a year or a few PE lessons which are mostly spent getting changed and listening to a teacher talk.

@Lola4321 i would say all of those things are essentially equivalent in seriousness to an egg and spoon race, even if they don’t involve an egg or spoon.

All that from the fact that some kids don't like sport day?!! 😂

Baggyeye · 22/06/2022 20:18

@Lola4321 surprised at long jump, high jump, discus, shot putt at primary school sports days

I think the key question is how do we get children who feel underconfident in sports days to join in? Simply forcing them is not going to make it a positive experience for them.

@Notbeinfunnehbut did your son say why he only picked one race?

If it's fun, then children will opt into it. The fact that some don't want to participate suggests that it isn't fun for those children.

Exercise is important but how many races someone takes part in on sports day will make a minuscule difference compared to all the PE lessons in the year.

Benjispruce4 · 22/06/2022 21:06

Our primary sports day itinerary:
3 legged race
sgg and spoon
obstacle race
dressing up race
running race

Hav never worked in a primary school that has shot put , long jump or high jump equipment.

FabFitFifties · 22/06/2022 21:18

Thinking a long way back, but, we had practice heats before sports day. So on actual day, the best competed, and the rest cheered on their house.

PrisonerofZeroCovid · 22/06/2022 21:18

My DC do high jump, long jump and hurdles for sports day in primary from year 4. Plus 100m, 200m and an 800m. No discus. Cricket ball throw is the only throwing event.
