I had my first root canal appointment nearly 2 months ago. I had spent so long in excruciating pain and had 4 courses of antibiotics but the infection kept going back, so I hoped this appointment would fix it but it hasn’t. I can’t bite on that side of my face because of how much it hurts my tooth. It’s awful. It also feels like it’s sitting differently in my mouth- I know it’s not but it feels like it’s sticking out lower than my other teeth.

there isn’t any obvious abscess or gum swelling, but the dentist said the infection is in the root. I’ve a long wait (6 month) before the 2nd appointment- is this the point where it stops hurting? Or should it have stopped hurting after the 1st appointment? I can’t afford to go private but the thought of waiting even longer in this pain is torturous but unfortunately the dentist can’t do the 2nd appointment any sooner.

basically, I don’t know if it’s normal for my tooth to still hurt after the 1st appointment and i just need to suck it up, or if it’s not normal and should be pain free by now.

You shouldn't be in severe pain 8 weeks after treatment, give your dentist a ring tomorrow and see if they can fit you in as an emergency. If they can't try 111.

Meanwhile, take 4 doses of paracetamol a day spaced 4 hours apart, and 3 of ibuprofen (if you can take it) to reduce the swelling.
If that doesn't help replace at least one of the paracetamol doses with co-codamol. When you see your dentist, ask for a prescription for something stronger.

Definitely not normal. You need to go back and be seen asap.

If it's 2 months since it was extirpated and there's another 6 months before it's completed/obturated; that's 8 months between RCT stages which is very excessive but no doubt Covid -related. Your tooth obviously needs opening back up and re-irrigation& re-dressing; it sounds like it's infected but hasn't quite got to the stage where the adjacent soft tissues are involved. Give them a ring first thing and ask them to see you as an emergency tomorrow.

Get some clove oil in chemist tomorrow, costs about a quid

Put a bit on a cotton bud, rub gum either side of tooth and the actual tooth and you'll be pain free in minutes. Hope you're feeling better soon x
