For a short holiday (like5-7 days)
Young couple wanting to enjoy sun, sea, good food and drinks.

would Menorca work for this? Where to go? Where to stay? Anything specific you would recommend to do/visit while there?

Cala en Bosch has lots of bars/restaurants around the marina for eg.

Piratesue · 20/06/2022 22:19

Fornells! Def not big on families, lovely setting, some great restaurants and bars . Lively marina setting and loads to do. Good bus links into Mahon as well
Friend has an air b and b there, I've been going for years!

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 22:37

Es castell is nice and quite unusual- lots of restaurants set round caves- I didn't like Cala galdana- was a complete fly fest around the beach when we were there and extremely British - nice setting- but that was about it

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 20/06/2022 22:38

We are just back and stayed at Cala n Forcat. Lovely area, about an hour from the airport. Plenty to see and do and would go again tomorrow

rewardacrosstrack · 20/06/2022 22:57

Me and DP went a few years ago pre DC but in our 30s and it was lovely but definitely on the quiet side where we stayed in Cala'n porter even for us. There's some beautiful beaches if you hire a car, but lots of the best ones have limited parking and won't actually allow you in if it's full so you can't just rock up early afternoon like you can in other places. We really enjoyed Lithica, amazing gardens/maze/sculptures in an old quarry which exceeded our expectations so would definitely recommend that

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 23:51

@Piratesue I agree - fornells or Es castell would be my pick

AnyFucker · 21/06/2022 00:00

Binibeca might suit you. Gorgeous coves and beaches within easy reach. Mahon a bus ride away. Lovely tapas restaurants and cocktail bars at the Vell end with Bambu and Paupa (young scene) to choose from just outside. There are more restaurants at Cala Torret a short taxi or good walk away. All around are some lovely little placas where you can sit and while away the time with a coffee and brandy or two

Have been recently and there are loads of young people there, couples and mixed groups. Hardly any English though, but that suits me.

Sarah13xx · 21/06/2022 00:04

We’re just back from Majorca instead and I would highly recommend going there. We go to the same places every year and had never considered here until now. The main attraction was the short flight time with our baby but I couldn’t believe how lovely it was. We’d usually go to Tenerife instead but the beaches there aren’t a patch on Majorca, the sea is so clear and beautiful

Crikeyalmighty · 21/06/2022 00:14

@Sarah13xx personally if I were theOP, I would be looking in Majorca at Puerto Pollensa, Cala d'or or Paguera ( very German- but I like it a lot) then again I love Palma and OP wasn't that struck so maybe we don't have the same taste. I enjoyed menorca well enough , but for me Majorca has it all if you pick the right resorts- especially if you get out and about. I always return to it over and over again

Gingersay · 21/06/2022 00:20

Menorca is beautiful definitely the nicest by far of all the Spanish islands, I've never felt so safe on holiday, its truly relaxing. Mahon is a stunning city I could spend the whole day in the fish market drinking gin and eating tapas. Son bou is lovely plenty of pubs and restaurants in the summer not so much out of high season. The public buses are immaculate and really cheap. If I win the lottery I'm buying one of the big houses that over look the harbour- it would need to be a euro millions win though!!

Crikeyalmighty · 21/06/2022 02:42

@Gingersay - personally have to disagree , I thought it was nice in a pleasant kind of way , -- scenically I much prefer Majorca , bit of a first world thing though lol- they are all lovely

Roselilly36 · 21/06/2022 06:32

We visited late Aug, can’t remember the exact resort, but probably the worst holiday ever, not much to do and so, so hot. Never returned, and wouldn’t recommend.

Hellsbe · 21/06/2022 06:33

much preferred Majorca. Wasn’t blown away by any restaurants there, and lots of kids around.

Plodosaurus · 21/06/2022 06:38

DH and I went a few years ago before we had D.C. I’m pretty boring and even for me it felt a bit too quiet and sedate. It’s very family oriented. I would definitely recommend Majorca or Ibiza or even one of the Canaries if you want some good restaurants and not somewhere where everyone is in bed by 9pm 😂

Hellsbe · 21/06/2022 06:39

Oh , and it was late may /early June , so not even school holidays.

Hellsbe · 21/06/2022 06:40

Bloody hell, meant late June/ early July!!

Simplelobsterhat · 21/06/2022 06:53

We are just back from a week in menorca, and liked it, but at an AI hotel with kids so not looking for same things as you! Mostly families or middle aged couples. However, DH and i would probably have enjoyed it when we were in our 20s - we've always been middle aged! And we did see some younger people enjoying the beaches and boat trips, we just weren't in the restaurants and bars in the evening to get a feel got that.

We stayed in cala'n bosch which had loads of restaurants and bars round the marina, plus a few by son xoriguer beach and a few by lighthouse the other side (the lighthouse bar sold itself on the beautiful sunsets). It was also an easy bus ride to ciutadella which has lots of bars and restaurants and was pretty. No idea if any would meet your criteria of 'nice' sorry!

We didn't get to Mahon but from what i hear that had more nightlife and probably more variety. There is a helpful trip adviser forum on menorca. If we hadn't has kids I think we'd have hired a car and explored more as there were lots of remote beaches and different sites we didn't get to, and to see mahon. Although the buses seemed good and were advertising routes to the different beaches if you didn't want to drive - in fact i saw signs for some beaches saying car parks closed or full, take bus only.

TheFairyCaravan · 21/06/2022 08:30

Menorca isn’t just for families. Admittedly a lot of families do go, but that’s because it’s so beautiful, the beaches are so safe and the flight is short. If you go out of the school holidays it’s not overrun with kids.

Me and DH always hire a car and go out and about. Cala Galdana is my favourite beach and there’s some amazing restaurants in Ciutadella.

Don’t be put off. We’ve been to Majorca and Menorca many, many times. Menorca is the best by far.

applesandoranges221 · 21/06/2022 08:31

I love Menorca, am 34 and single and have never found it too quiet, but then I don't go looking for nightlife. Have been twice and am going back in September!

knackeredmu · 21/06/2022 08:32

The old town of Mahon or Ciudellla - are stunning full of Spanish restaurants along the waterside and a wonderful chilled vibe - a long weekend / short week based in either small city and then heading out to the beaches during the day would be perfect - and avoids the more resorty places

happyharpy78 · 21/06/2022 09:02

We have been going to Menorca for many years and now have a house there. I think it depends when and where you go. In the school holidays yes, there will be loads of kids - the beaches are gorgeous and safe, lots of the accommodation is set up for families. My children (who are now adults but no kids of their own yet) still love to go with their partners. They get the bus into Mahon and eat there when they fancy a dressed up meal out as most of the resort restaurants are nothing special. So I would choose a resort fairly near to Mahon or Ciutadella for your evening entertainment. But yes, very little in the way of clubbing. I can guarantee relaxation though!

bubblicious3 · 21/06/2022 11:43

We have been lots, usually to Arenal d'en Castell which has a stunning beach in a horseshoe bay and the best sunset views. Love it there

Crikeyalmighty · 21/06/2022 11:44

Actually I forgot Ciutedella- that was really nice- so yes C'an Bosch is a good choice- I liked Ciutedella much more than Mahon

namechangeanonymous · 21/06/2022 11:47

I've been fortunate to travel to quite a lot of places over the last 20 years, and I have to say Menorca is up there for me and has special memories. The flight times from Manchester really made a difference too.
