hello,

I have an appointment this afternoon to have an IUD (coil) fitted and am still undecided on whether to have the copper or the mirena.

Copper I am worried about the heavy/constant bleeding stories I've heard, although my periods have always been normal - not sure if you're more likely to have those problems if you already have heavy periods.

mirena I am worried because I suffered with adult acne in the past and it made me feel very low so am scared it will come back with a vengeance. Also heard tales of struggling to loose weight.

for background I have 2 children under the age of 3 and definitley do not want any more, I'm 27 and have been on the implant, the combined pill and the mini pill. implant was awful as I bled pretty much constantly and the combined pill gave me headaches.

which did you go for and was it a good experience?

thanks!

I'm on my second copper coil I love it I can take anything with hormones so suits me better periods can be heavy but bearable.
Insertion wasn't pleasant but was over quickly.

babyjellyfish · 20/06/2022 09:53

I had the copper coil.

For the first 6 months or so my periods were heavier than usual but then they settled down and became light again.

Never had any random bleeding mid-cycle.

I will probably get another one when I'm done having babies.

givemushypeasachance · 20/06/2022 09:59

I'm on my third mirena, another one the best thing I ever did. It seems like quite a "marmite" thing - either it works well for you and you love it, or you really don't get on with it and hate the bloody thing. But I'm in the love camp! I hated my heavy periods and period pains, was constantly on painkillers for a week a month and worrying about flooding, waking up with blood everywhere and so on. Now I basically don't have periods, it's fab. Insertion isn't fun but it was okay, had a few cramps afterwards but not too bad compared to period pains I would get anyway.

Talkingtopigeons · 20/06/2022 10:04

I've tried both. Mirena hormones didn't suit me unfortunately, caused me mild but constant bleeding which led to me feeling really tired all the time so I had to have it removed. Switched to the copper coil and it was ok initially but I did develop heavier periods, which would have been ok in itself but the PMS and headaches that came with that were too much. One thing that did suprise me when I had it removed was my mild but frequent back pain/niggles that I had, which I put down to age, disappeared overnight!

I've had to go back to trying out different pills, currently have a less commonly used version of the mini pill and plan to try out a lot oestrogen combined pill soon.

I hadn't had children when I had the coils and insertion was uncomfortable but ok, and quick. I did feel a bit strange afterwards and would recommend not rushing off to an appointment/back to work if avoidable.

I have a mirena. No periods after about 8 months or so. I’m not in a relationship at the moment, but will be having it replaced next year and it should hopefully see me through the menopause.

MushyPeasPrincess · 20/06/2022 16:13

Mirena here, to help with horrendous periods after having DC. First six months, it didn't seem to make any difference but then periods became much lighter and after a year barely anything at all. Such a relief!

Amyrosa · 20/06/2022 16:41

so i went for one called klyeena, a less potent version of mirena basically.

didnt hurt being put in really, bit of discomfort and then felt like a period cramp but nothing major thankfully, I did take ibuprofen and paracetamol about 40 minutes beforehand.

lets see how we go!

Good luck op - I have Mirena and it has changed my life for the better.

Sahara123 · 20/06/2022 16:58

I’ve had several mirenas over about 15 years because of horrendous periods . As with others it took about a year to settle down , then no more periods ever .! Bonus was that I went though the menopause without realising as I wasn’t having periods ! Highly recommended

Cotswoldmama · 20/06/2022 16:59

I've got the copper coil I've had it in for about 4-5 years and I've had no issues at all. I would say if anything my periods are lighter. I really wanted to have hormone free contraception. Having it inserted was really uncomfortable but to know it lasts 10 years and I won't have to do it again until then is a great. It's a relief to know I've got contraception sorted and my body is functioning naturally without hormones.

MrsToothyBitch · 20/06/2022 17:18

I had a copper & loved it. It went in fine, came out fine & did the job. The downside was uncomfy, heavy periods initially but after the first few, other than being slightly longer than my off coil ones, they got better with time as it settled down and they were actually better than my not on bc ones.

I had it out at the end of its run and I'm currently bc free as I probs will want a new one removed before its time is up to TTC (we use condoms for now). I pass much bigger clots & flood now. I think the IUD broke them down like a little macerator! I will never use hormonal bc and would happily have another IUD.

That's what I've got and had it for about 18 months now.

On balance, I'm happy with it. Two things I don't like - one, which is random spotting through the month. I don't get a period really, the bleeding is very very light but it's a little annoying as hard to predict. Only other negative is it's definitely caused me to have some acne on my back, which I never had before other than on one particular pill that didn't agree with me. It's settled down a bit since I first had it put in, but it's a bit frustrating.

However it feels better than being on a higher level of hormone from taking the pill, and I do like that it can stay in for 5 years without me having to think about it! No other side effects.
