Kayak I'd say. Definitely not paddleboard!

Depends on where and which for canoes and kayaks.

Ive done both paddle boarding and kayking (I use to own padddle board), kayaking is easier. You need to have really good balance for paddle boarding as are standing up, it is very easy to fall in the water especially if the wind gets up and the water starts to become choppy. In a kayak, you are only sitting down.

Thank you! I thought the oddly boards looked easy so I massively misjudged that one!

Out of interest why kayak over canoe

Vote for kayak here. I've got a sit-on one (as opposed to sit-in), and I love that you can just chuck it in the water and go. Would recommend.

NumberTheory · 19/06/2022 03:08

Another vote for kayak!

This is why kayak versus canoe is more difficult. Sit on kayaks are pretty easy compared to closed-in kayaks. And some people find the double oar easy to manage, I do. But if you struggle it with that canoes may be easier. So it would probably go:

Sit on kayak
Canoe
Sit in kayak

Paddle board

Surfboard.

Where are you wanting it for? Sea? River? There's lots of things to consider here I think

I was an outdoors pursuits coach and can coach kayaking and canoeing. Both are quite tricky. If you're going to throw yourself down a river with no experience please make sure you're with a club with a coach and lots of experience.

Messing around in the sea, where it's lifeguarded between the correct flags a paddle board or sit in top kayak could be fun.

Alternatively look for a club/ outdoor activity centre and try them all out. See which you like. Get some good safety instruction and a bit of experience and you will have lot and lots of fun.

Good luck.

I use my paddleboard as a sit down experience most of the time, it has a little seat I can attach.
But if you can transport it easily I think a kayak is best.

WhereIsMyGlasses · 19/06/2022 05:28

I've done both, I was paddleboarding yesterday in fact. Like a previous poster said, you can sit or kneel on a paddleboard, and can also get a seat to attach so no standing necessaryif you don't want to. I have my own paddleboard but would now love a kayak too, even without falling in, you do stay drier in a kayak, not completely though. I like the way you paddle ( not sure that's the correct term!) in a kayak. So it depends what you want to do I think.

ChateauMargaux · 19/06/2022 06:19

Are you looking to try or buy? River, lake or sea? How comfortable are you in water?
How often do you think you might use it?

I have both.. paddleboard is nice but relatively pedestrian, in my opinion my kayak is more fun. However, I am more likely to find other people to go stand up paddle boarding with. Cost and transportation are also factors to consider.

Yes outdoor centre on a lake

Probably should have said with a 10, 11 and 12 year old in tow. Hence extreme beginners comment but the same is true for me.

Kayak
Canoeing is more tricky to steer as only 1 blade. Also you kneel so centre of gravity is nigher so easier to capsize
SUP is tricky, my DH canoes at very high level and he struggled a bit with SUP to start with lol

ChristinePerfect · 19/06/2022 07:41

I prefer SUP to kayaking. I had lessons for both but found kayaking more of a physical strain.
We go out in a mixed group, the kayakers are faster than the SUPs and, at this time of year they don't have issues dragging weed along like SUPs do. Last week I had to stop half a dozen times to clear weed off my fins.
Paddle boards are usually easier to store and transport.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 19/06/2022 07:44

My dad tried kayaking and hated it, found the position really uncomfortable. I would think paddle boarding on a lake wouldn’t be too difficult as no waves, but maybe if there’s boats etc, that can make it more challenging.
