Refusing to Use WhatsApp for this reason

dottypotter · 18/06/2022 20:29

Someone in the family refuses to use WhatsApp and be in the family group as they don't believe it's private and safe.
I have never heard anyone give this as a reason has anyone else

We now have to text them separately etc cos they won't use it.

It's so useful to all be on the same group. Just never heard it as a reason before.

My db has moved to signal for this reason. So now I use both.

But I'm looking for novel ways to act like a cunt

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

You are very funny @orwellwasright . Properly giggling aloud here (not being sarcastic)

For an app to be totally free, there has to be something in it for the developer, so your family member may have a point.
WhatsApp are gathering data of sorts about you each and every time you use it and in turn use that for marketing purposes.
Maybe your family member just isn't up for that.

Quite. And it's owned by Meta/ FB, not a particularly ethical company.

I’m so pleased I have no friends

A friend used the same reason, then said about another app part created by the person who created wattsapp, as if that app is somehow more secure ?, Bottom line with agencies like gchq, nsa or even hackers of the grey hat and black hat, etc electronic communications are never secure.

skybluee · 18/06/2022 21:31

Just use carrier pigeons instead.

Hawkins001 · 18/06/2022 21:32

I must admit, I do like modernisation of technology, but at other times I prefer the old methods,.especially when my tablets are being a pickle.

Intriguing, I'll raise the suggestion and choose owls ?

You would tell your family members “I’m only using this one method of communication (WhatsApp) and if you don’t agree to use it and be in the group, then you’re not getting invited to anything… Sod you!”.

How bizzare. Some of you must have very odd relationships with your family.

Agree. Fortunately, nobody in my family uses Whatsapp. We ring one another up if we want to arrange something. Even my student children have worked out that there's no point trying to persuade me to do something online when I don't have a phone which does these things.

I have family members like this. It means they miss out on some stuff, mainly pictures or "were in the area, we'd love to meet up" type stuff. I'm not spending money sending picture messages though! They can see them when we meet up.

What a shame. Surely if you wanted to meet up with those people you would give them a quick call/text/email/post card ? It really doesn't take a very long time.

So was I. Not much on MN tickles me, but this did.

CupidStunt22 · 18/06/2022 21:35

I always wonder about these people...does aunt Doris really think the government is spying on her messages about crochet class and her new pile cream?
You're just not that interesting.

orangespiral · 18/06/2022 21:36

I don’t use it, not for privacy reasons but because I don’t want another app that I need to check. I use messenger, which you can also send group messages on. It doesn’t take that long to copy and paste a message.

ivykaty44 · 18/06/2022 21:37

texting is less secure that WhatsApp surely?

It's not the government Confused. It's having Meta gather data about anything and everything you do to target advertising etc. Some people don't like having their privacy compromised in this way, which is fair enough.

CheeseComa · 18/06/2022 21:41

I have used the same argument as an excuse so I don't have to endure several very annoying and at times cringeworthy family and friends WhatsApp groups. The amount of inane shit people keep posting on there (those with young children and pfb snydrome are the worst offenders) had me tearing my hair out.

Wether it's an excuse or a genuine concern, your relative is also absolutely right: in terms of privacy and data security, WhatsApp is a pretty bad choice. I have no idea why anyone would still want to use it when you could just move to the far superior Signal instead.

Trivester · 18/06/2022 21:41

Two tin cans and a long string, that’s what you need.

So incredibly odd isn't it. I don't use WhatsApp, didn't realise most people did to be honest.

Ferrarilover · 18/06/2022 21:43

I don't understand why people are so fanatical about their privacy. Who do they think is interested in their mundane lives?

Ok, so Whatsapp probably does collect data, possibly to target advertising towards you. But if you're anything like me, you don't buy things just because they pop up on your screen. So I can't see the point.

And the groups are very useful.

stepuporshutup · 18/06/2022 21:54

I have a problem with WhatsApp that nobody else appears to have
Tried to sort it out with them but can only get the standard q and a nobody to talk to

Went to our provider for them to say I am wrong and it is not possible and must be me

I will call someone on WhatsApp and after a few minutes someone in my contacts join in and say I called them. I did not and have not called them my phone is on speaker therefore I am no where near the contacts to ask them to join the chat nobody believes me and nothing i can do to stop it

Youaremysunshine14 · 18/06/2022 21:55

I don’t use it because the thought of having to field banal messages all day long and the constant pinging would drive me to distraction. Would much rather chat on the phone. Fortunately my close family are all the same and friends just contact me via text or Messenger. If that annoys them they’ve never mentioned it.

Crimeismymiddlename · 18/06/2022 22:00

An old friend did this, happy to publish her business all over social media instead,
It got too annoying to message her separately from the group, no the only, or even biggest reason we are not good friends anymore but it did not help.

Ponderingwindow · 18/06/2022 22:01

I have to ask, what is the advantage to WhatsApp over just sending a group text?

You know where everyone has read it due to the blue ticks, and it's a log of who said x, especially if you cannot recall if anyone has already suggested x
