to not expect a plumber to deliberately cut wires on our boiler, so we buy a new one from him!

Our combi boiler broke down 4 days ago (friday), and until tonight, we have had no hot water or heating. We live in a quite rural place (its a bit like emmerdale!! ) and we trust our local tradesmen and always try and use them, however, no plumber could come until later his week, so i rang a plumber from a nearby town.
he came and told me that the boiler had broken because there was something wrong with the pressure, and all the leaking water had caused all the bits in the boiler to rust as it had been happening for a few months...apparently
he told me to ring the maker of the company, and get them to come out and see what needs replacing, but if it came to more than £150, then to ring him and he would get me a new boiler for about £600. anyway, i didnt ring the makers, and got my dads friends round today who is a plumber. hes a really nice local man, and didnt charge us for the first two call outs, despite them being at 6 oclock at night. he put all the new parts in for us, but the boiler still wouldnt work, so he had a look at the electrics that are in a separate little box under the boiler, and he said 'somebodies cut this wire'. and when he held the two ends of the wire together, the boiler clicked right back on! the wire had obviously been cut, but i didnt do it! so the first guy that came must have - and that is why he told me to ring him if the cost was going to be more than £150, because he knew it would be, especially with call out charges etc!
arnt some people really shit?! its made me really angry that he would do that. im a young woman, with a three year old, in a freezing house in the middle of january, and he was going to charge me £600 for a new boiler, and then its usually another £500 to fit it! the pig!

thats crap!!!

PeachesMcLean · 14/01/2008 23:04

Trading Standards for a start? Can Corgi advise? he should be corgi registered. will your dad's friend stand up for you?
Has it all been fixed? Can you take pictures of the wires?

I'd be sooooo cross.

bunnyhunny · 14/01/2008 23:05

can you contact trading standards? that is terrible! I would at least let him know what you have done, and threaten to contact the press or something

bunnyhunny · 14/01/2008 23:06

sorry that should be let him know you know what he has done

mumzyof2 · 14/01/2008 23:07

he was corgi registered. it was a plumbing company - that you ring them, and they send someone out that day. he turned up in a van, like the one the dingles have in emmerdale! the plumber that fixed it had heard of them.
it has been fixed, but was shocked - it was cruel really, our house was bloody freezing, and no hot water with a three yr old, and he probably could have fixed it there and then!

should i ring them do you think? i dont want trouble off them.

oo, what a louse. Trading Standards definitely. Get his nasty greedy bottom spanked.

PeachesMcLean · 14/01/2008 23:16

Should you ring the plumbing company? Hmm, I suspect you'll get pretty short shrift from them on the phone, though perhaps put it in writing to them? They'll either just deny it, which would prompt you to go to TS, or say "oh yeah we've sacked him really sorry" in which case you still need to go to TS because they're sending out duffers in their name. Dunno though. That's what I'd think.

The TS people I dealt with were really nice and on my side. In fact, I got the impression they were quite disappointed when it all fell through!

mumzyof2 · 14/01/2008 23:17

what would happen with ts? do they investigate? or just note it down?

Similarish thing here phoned a company that advertises no call out fee and free quotes, sent someone round who was here for all of 5 minutes, I think he tried to light the pilot light thingy then demended 75 quid. I paid what else can you do but still feel cheated and it was 2 years ago!!
What was the name of the progeamme with those blokes on a motorbike? enjoyed watching that, this kind of thing must be so lucrative..... but to cut the wires then charge and fit a new one!!!!
Glad you know another plumber

mumzyof2 · 14/01/2008 23:36

The guy only charged me £20 as petrol money too, thats why I was so shocked that he'd done this.

1dilemma · 14/01/2008 23:41

I'm guessing low fee this time so you'll call him next.
Isn't 600 way too cheap for a new boiler anyway?
I echo trading standards suggestion, they will keep you anonymous too if you ask

mumzyof2 · 14/01/2008 23:44

Boilers are about £500-600 arnt they, but then when they flush your system to fit a new one etc, its another £500-600, so could be £1500. When we bought the house, the owners told us the boiler was only 18 months old, and apparently its 5 years old! Some people are twits.

OP posts:
mumzyof2 · 15/01/2008 10:18

so what would ts do?

OP posts:
mishymoo · 15/01/2008 10:24

I think TS would initially take all details and keep it on file until they build up enough complaints (I think?)

I would also report him to Corgi, however you may have trouble proving he cut those wires. You never know, Trading Standards and Corgi may already have had complaints about this company.

You would be lucky to get a boiler for that amount. We recently had a new combi boiler fitted and it cost us £2,800.

Freckle · 15/01/2008 10:29

Write to his company and cc it to Corgi and Trading Standards. When they see that, they will deal with the matter straight away rather than trying to fob you off or ignore it. It may not be the company's fault; he may just be a rogue employee.

1dilemma · 15/01/2008 22:24

TS will take details and persue if they can I have taken something to ts (still ended up thousands out of pocket) but they had to remove advertising which might have mislead others so I feel vindicated in that way. Sounds like they won't do much but they need a body of evidence so it is worth complaining

moortownplumber · 30/04/2023 08:55

Had this yesterday,
Omar a local gas engineer in leeds,
told the customer boiler was totally gone, rang for a second opinion and wires found to be snipped,
outrageous, cost of living is forcing people to seek out cheap labour instead of reputable companies
