Should I be happy with my weight?

Nananananahh · 17/06/2022 19:45

Am 5ft5 and 11st 6lbs.

My BMI is 26.6

Ive lost a lot of weight and have naturally settled here.

Nothing I do makes me lose more (and if I do lose a few lbs it creeps back up to around 11.6)

I am alright with how I look in general but I am still very round of belly (that could be due to excess skin too)

Should I just accept this as my weight?

My goal was always to me a 'normal BMI/<25'
26.6 is overweight still.

Just do a bit more exercise to tone up and you'll be fine. BMI isn't perfect anyway, you're far better off being a smidge overweight but exercising and eating healthily than doing crash diets to lose an extra few pounds.

I hope this link works

www.google.co.uk/search?q=bmi+and+health+risks&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari#imgrc=MMXORui1LSQ6EM

It's showing how risk changes with BMI

It's just a random grab off the internet but it was the shape I expected

I’m a bit confused by the comments that say ‘your weight is settling how it is’ but we are totally in control of our energy intake/expenditure.

if OP is eating in a way that feels healthy to her & her weight is not moving then she is just eating at maintenance calories for her current body weight. Maintenance changes as we do though.

There isn’t one size or weight we are all ‘meant’ to be. If OP was to lose weight and then ate at her new maintenance calories for that weight she would stay the same too.

surely you wouldn’t say to someone who was morbidly obese (I’m talking maybe 400-500lbs) and struggled to lose weight that their body was just settling there as if it’s destiny. Our bodies ‘settle’ because we allow them to not because some higher being has determined that’s where we are meant to be..

Excellent post.

If BMI is to be believed, the average rugby player is morbidly obese! It’s only relevant to people with a specific slight frame and no additional muscle mass - and was invented by a mathematician and not a physician in 19th Century Belgium, when people were much smaller due to all sorts of deficiencies.
Why the medical profession cling to it is beyond me - strikes me as a lazy way of determining whether people are at a healthy weight…

Most people aren’t rugby players or carrying such a great amount of muscle that their bmi will be totally inaccurate. It’s a blunt tool which tells you if you’re likely to have a heathy weight or not. For most people it’s going to be broadly useful rather than something to hold up as absolute gospel.

Thankyou. I previously had an eating disorder, that was the cause for my weight gain.

I've had Wright loss surgery and cannot overeat anymore (and do not feel the need to, a real miracle) so I'm not really too concerned right now about regaining because I simply cannot eat enough food to gain!

I would leave everything for a few months. Chill. Enjoy your current weight. BUT you need a "klaxon". Make sure you know this (or maybe 1 or 2 pounds higher) is your maximum. If you get above, say 11st 8lb, then you need to watch what you eat for a week or two until you are back comfortably under 11st 6lb.

I went for years around 66/68kg. Not massive but I knew I was not 100% happy and BMI was 25/26ish. I lost 10kg just by coming off the pill. (Actually about 8kg was probably coming off the pill, the other 2kg was spurred on by the weight loss if that makes sense...it was dropping off so I also upped the execerise and MFP for a month or so.)

At my lowest weight I was 57kg. And possibly a but scrawny round the face. 58/59kg is good for me. I am currently 60kg, but I am coming down again after hitting 62kg after Easter. 62kg is my klaxon moment. The, "OK Jimmy, drop the extra piece of toast, watch the biscuits, run an extra 5K this week" weight. I groan when I hit it, but a few weeks of taking care (not dieting by the way, just watching the carb extras) and it drops again.

I also know I put on that extra 2kg during school holidays (term time only so am off with the children, snacking, icecreams etc). I tend not to worry about it and know that I can drop it again once term starts.

Celebrate what you have done. But (sorry) just know you need to know when the relaxing into your new weight has to end (your 62kg klaxon) so you don't end up back where you started.

And in a few months yes, maybe think about bringing the weight down again. If you want to.

God this is me! Gone from over 20 stone down to 11.3. I can't get any lower but its recently occurred to me that my loose skin probably weighs about half a stone!

RubyTrees · 18/06/2022 10:46

@JanisMoplin, try having quinoa instead of rice, it's so much more nutritious.

Yeah. I think I could get a tummy tuck now and most of my belly fat would be cut away with the skin.

The last stone of so has come off my boobs and bum. So now my breast and arse are flat but still have lots of hanging tummy fat. I'm scared to lose more from my bum/boobs, I really don't want to! I don't think it will come off my overhang 😔

I would have a break and focus on maintaining for now, and then see how you feel in a few months

I was about 11.6 at my heaviest, which was post lockdown, and I have to say that I felt pretty unhealthy at that weight

I dieted until I got to 10.8 and then took a break for a few months. I then dieted again to get to 10st.

Since then, I've stopped dieting, but my weight has continued to fall, albeit more gradually. I think that this is down to small lifestyle changes that I stuck with, such as not putting sugar in hot drinks.

I think it also depends on your age. I'm in my 30s, but if you are post 50 then I think it becomes a lot harder to lose weight, and you probably need to not be so hard on yourself.

user7637296 · 18/06/2022 11:33

I wouldn't be happy at that weight/BMI.

My BMI is 21.3.

But you seem content so it's all subjective!

Wrongkindofovercoat · 18/06/2022 11:42

@user7637296 Have you ever weighed 20 stone ?

oopsfellover · 18/06/2022 11:43

Try to be happy with yourself. Your weight (which sounds fine) is only one aspect of you and doesn't have to dominate.

HintofVintagePink · 18/06/2022 11:51

You’ve done brilliantly well! Agree with PP, take a mental rest now and enjoy your achievements!

Drmartens · 18/06/2022 11:57

I am the same height and weight. Ideally I would like to lose a bit more weight but I am much happier with my body now than I was.

I thin it is subjective. If you've always been BMI21 then 26 would seem heavy to you.

In 2020 my BMI was 45 so 26 seems light to me.

Then you'll never understand how being just 1.5 over a healthy BMI could be a massive achievement :)

KylieKoKo · 17/06/2022 21:41

if you’re an average person. 26.6 is too fat. Sorry but it is.

Too fat for what @MrsSkylerWhite?

If a generally accepted measure is telling you you're overweight than it's probably a good idea to take notice of it....this is however completely not relevant to the question should you be happy with it....you should be happy with it if you are happy with it....if you're not then no you shouldn't....are you uncomfortable in a bikini on holiday....do you like what you see in the mirror....if so great....if not do something about it....in my opinion the only level your body finds on its own is as a result of the balance between calories consumed and energy expended....change the balance one way or the other and your body will react....it's not complicated.....you are the only person that can answer the question though

Nananananahh · 18/06/2022 13:43

I would never wear a bikini so that's irrelevant. I would happily wear a swimming costume.

I do not like what I see in the mirror no. But that's very saggy skin/breats and extreme stretchmarks from weight gain.

Nothing losing more weight would fix.

Carpy88999 · 18/06/2022 14:04

With weight loss and that stuff the best advice I was ever given was to close your eyes and imagine your dream physique now open them. You ain't getting it!

Aim for half of it and anything else is a bonus. Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 18/06/2022 14:07

If you want to tone while eating a decent diet, no starvation required, do some weight trainings.

You've done the hard part.
