To think we are powerless to the increasing cost of living…

Just that really, been discussing with DP this morning and he feels there is little in the way of change we can make as everything affecting the cost of living is dictated by those too powerful.

I feel jaded by the thought of this and I’m a big advocate for the power of the people and think that all change has been started by one person or a small group so surely there is scope for change?

We earn ‘good money’ joint household income of about £90k with overtime but we are feeling the pinch - my jobs means I have to travel all over my county for work so today to be sent 50miles away is a kick in the gut for the cost of fuel! Hence triggered these thoughts.

What can we do!? If anything?

What do you mean to change it? For yourself/ household? Or for the country?

If the former you can economise, but I think the impact of that will only reduce the impact slightly.

If the latter, email you MP, vote at the next election, join or donate campaign groups.

But overall, I am inclined to agree with your husband I'm afraid.

Unless there are riots in the streets (something I do not condone) I don't see much changing to be honest. It's terrifying.

A friend said the other day "well at least it's not just us, it's the whole world who is affected!" Like what did she want me to say? "Oh that's okay then!" 🙃

Can you not claim that back?

Narwhalelife · 13/06/2022 11:43

@adlitem oh yes cut backs ahoy here to manage, particularly tricky month with costly car trouble and 2x vets visits so feeling more than ever. But I was thinking on a larger scale because there are people in much more serious situation than us and I just can’t see how it can continue.

@ZeroFuchsGiven we get a tiny ‘token’ payment which we are grateful for but company cannot cover the costs at all and low staffing means we can’t recruit to cover the whole area thus longer trips for us

@amijustparanoidorjuststoned yup, I just can’t help but think something needs to be done, what with rising cost of gas and electric again in October - not sure what the answer is though

I'd be updating my CV sharpish.

They can't afford staff nor employee expenses????

If this was France, we'd all have been on strike MONTHS ago. Why are we not more like the French? Why are we taking this shit?

averythinline · 13/06/2022 12:42

Your employer should be paying your fuel properly....no wonder they can't get staff..

Why are you subsidying them? Thats bonkers ..

On a larger scale.. unfortunately i think options are limited but yes vote, campaign, theres a tuc march in London on 18jun..not sure about other cities...
Help those you can.....foodbank/time ....

On a smaller scale stand up for your own and other workers rights and don't work for free/less than you should....

..they're not going to recruit if they poorly pay and don't pay costs in a job that needs travel .....why would they if they have staff that will do it for free

Lalosalamanca · 13/06/2022 12:44

Because we aren't French. Stiff upper lip and all that...

Ted27 · 16/11/2022 09:54

railway workers have been striking for months, postal workers have been on strike,
my local refuse collection was on stike for 6 months this year
nurses, civil servants have voted to strike
Im sure there are more

Glumbums · 17/11/2022 12:59

We can vote out the Conservatives
We can not vote for things like Brexit
We can protest
We can make our own budgets and stick to them.
I won't be going silly at Xmas
