Fractured elbow & holiday

It is probably karma for booking a term time holiday with school ages children but my 8 yr old daughter has just fractured her elbow and we are due to go to the south of France next week.

It is a camp site with water slides, beach , splash pool, pools etc.

Can't speak to insurance company until tomorrow and fracture clinic will cal tomorrow as well.

I am guessing I will need a doctor note to get my money back. Is the doctor likely to write one? The cast goes almost to her shoulder 🤦‍♀️

I am tk be honest really upset as I was really looking forward to it and the same site has no availability the rest of the summer.

If she's well enough to travel just get a water proof cast cover. My DS broke his arm a few years ago just before we went to France. He was in a full cast up to his shoulder. Waterproof cover worked brilliantly and he was in and out the pool with no problems. I did check with the insurance company before we went that he was covered of he needed anything done whilst we were away.

I work in a childrens a&e and also cover fracture clinics. We don't recommend waterproof covers for submerging a cast. They are meant to be used for protection against splashes from showers/baths.

Are you flying? Airlines also have their own rules for flying in an above elbow cast. Depending on the material used for casting it may not be able to be split.

I'd wait for the ortho team to call. Sometimes a different plan is made from the initial a&e visit. If you can't go, then go through insurance to see what documents they require for cancellation.

Sending some hugs. We've had a lot of disappointed children (& parents) this week in the same scenario.

Thank you both. I would prefer to cancel at this point as the whole holiday will be stressful.

Will wait to see what happens and check with easy jet

Yep, karma. Sadly, your daughter suffered

holidayelbow · 12/06/2022 16:45

@Moithered well aren't you a delight.

Unless you're now not allowed to fly for medical reasons, the insurance company may claim you could still go. Not being able to use the swimming pool is not a reason for cancelling the whole holiday (though I'd feel as stressed and sad as you do). Have you spoken to them?
The alternative is postponing the trip?

@Moithered well aren't you a delight.

You mentioned karma! The suffering refers to cancelled holiday, not her elbow
