Upper endoscopy

This is not really an AIBU but a shameless post for traffic. DD (8) has an upper endoscopy booked today and I'm not sure how long it's likely to take...? I'm assuming she'll be under sedation and it will take time to wear off, but the letter didn't give a lot of details and I annoyingly missed the pre-appointment call yesterday.

She's desperate to be fit for school tomorrow because they have a trip in the afternoon? Am I being overcautious to think it's probably going to be 3-4 hours and she may still be feeling groggy for a while after?

(I am taking her and it's an 'admission' but not overnight)

it’s more likely to be GA for an 8 yr old it it’s a GI endoscopy (rather than nasendoscopy). Would be surprised if the school were prepared to take her on a trip tomorrow, less than 24 hrs after a GA, even if she does feel well enough to attend. However, without pre-assessment they may not be able to proceed anyway.

Jourdain11 · 12/06/2022 11:00

Ugh - so mad at myself for missing the call.

The letter mentions sedation but nothing about GA. She did have a previous appointments and it was mentioned that they'd be booking her in for this, but the letter was short on details.

Obviously if it's GA the school trip will be out tomorrow! My expectation would have been GA for an 8-year old too, but the letter implied otherwise.

I recently had one for myself so could be different and I think I was only in the centre for an hour, 90 mins and most of that was because of the sedation. I felt fine afterwards and actually had a job interview that afternoon so was fairly with it but not allowed to drive or be left alone for 24 hours

Jourdain11 · 12/06/2022 11:35

Ah, okay, thank you! I'm guessing it could be different for kids, maybe not wanting to do it with only sedation.

She's very chilled about it, I'm going to get there a bit early with her in case there's anything pre-appt that needs to be covered as a result of missing yesterday's call. Worst case scenario we'll have to wait outside!

Guess there’s only one way to find out now… hope it goes well. (Sure you were planning to tell them anyway, but just in case, school still need to know she’s had the procedure if she does go tomorrow in case there are any problems… normally even after ‘just’ sedation the rules are that you need 24hrs adult supervision).

Porcupineintherough · 12/06/2022 11:38

She will definitely be sedated and should be completely back to normal after a few hours.

Jourdain11 · 12/06/2022 12:32

Thanks for all the info! Seems like I am not completely misunderstanding this then, which is reassuring.

3.30pm on a Sunday afternoon is an interesting time to schedule this, but it seems to be a bit of a post-Covid thing and I'm glad they can fit it in quickly. DD is very chilled and her main concern is whether she'll get a copy of the video to watch (ew). I hope she's not going to freak out when we get there and the reality hits her!

The trip is just a choir thing to watch a music performance locally, so it's not like a whole day thing or a long journey. I already let the school know and their take was that she's fine to come in as long as she's not suffering any after-effects, etc.

I have had 14 endoscopies over the last 5 years and I've always had sedation. You're not allowed to drive for 24 hours afterwards (not a problem for your DD, of course!) and I always feel a bit sleepy for the rest of the day and have a bit of a sore throat, but I'm always fine by the next day. I'm sure your DD will be OK for her trip tomorrow - half the battle for me is the anxiety I feel beforehand, but it sounds like your DD has this under control, and she'll boss it!

BeaLola · 12/06/2022 13:13

I have had a couple - obviously couldn't drive home but the longest I was at centre was 2hrs and obviously sone of that is pre check in etc . I had a bit of a sore throat afterwards but apart from that was fine and went to work next day etc.

I am sure they will advise you once there what to expect it , good luck to her & you and hope outcome is good news

Jourdain11 · 12/06/2022 19:19

All went fine! She had sedation but not GA and was very calm for the whole time. Took a while to 'wake up' properly in recovery, but she's now bouncing around right as rain. She wasn't impressed with being told she should just have soup and crackers to eat for the rest of today, or similar... Thanks for the help earlier.

Also managed the trip fine, but she was a bit tired by the end of the day and it was definitely a good call to make sure the school were fully informed. She has more investigations scheduled now but it seems like they will be less invasive 🤞 I think she'd prefer them to be scheduled during morning lessons rather than Sunday afternoon, too! 😃
