Ukraine fastracked into EU- good idea?

I read the article below and am not so sure. I think it will result in the break up of the EU in its current form. Berlin and Paris are right to be hesitant about this.

As much as I feel sorry for Ukraine, they are not ready for EU membership. It is very poor with a high level of corruption. I voted remain by the way so this is not a case of a leave voter hoping it all falls apart without us. If anything I think it could end up breaking up and a new western coalition forming which I would support.

Things are shifting quite a lot in the EU. Old alliances are creaking and new interests are emerging. I fear that in the end the Ukraine crisis will weaken the EU, even though I hope it won't happen.

I heard this in the news this morning

It’s an interesting ask from Ukraine I haven’t really formed an opinion yet but would like to hear more from spokespeople etc

I think it will be the least the EU can do for Ukraine after encouraging them to seek NATO membership which has resulted in todays situation. Ireland had nothing to contribute when we joined the EU but membership and funding has dragged our infrastructure into the right century and now we are contributing members. I hope EU can do the same for Ukraine

AFAIK getting candidate status only means that Ukraine will at some point in the future become members. All the problems, such as corruption will have to be dealt with first. I don't think they will be fast tracked.
Turkey, for example, first applied in 1987 and is still not a member. Macedonia applied in 2004 and is still waiting.
Whether it is good or bad for the EU to expand so much is something I will leave to more knowledgeable posters. I presume that there are advantages and disadvantages to this.

Yes. Fast tracked. As in made to conform
to the entry requirements very quickly, and be helped to do so

Turkey got EU candidate status in 2004. 18 years ago. Just saying.

It's just candidacy that is being spoken about right now and it is agreed that they will have to take measures to tackle things like corruption before they would be granted membership, something that could take many, many years. Ukraine is an important country when it comes to global food security, I'm sure when the time is right they will prove to be valuable members of the EU.
