Apparently I'm weird for shutting 1st floor windows at night because burglars don't like to enter through 1st floor windows?

I reminded OH to shut the bathroom window before bedtime, because it is a safety issue. He said, why? I said, because it's not safe to leave it open all night, it's not a small window, it'll be an easy entry point for burglars. He said I was weird to think this and that burglars do not particularly want to use a ladder to get into someone's house via an open window on the 1st floor. I was just so shocked that he can even think that! Please fellow mumsnetters, tell me I'm not being unreasonable to think this!

I work in law enforcement. Burglars definitely do enter first floor windows. I'm same as you op, all windows closed at bed time, especially landings and bathroom. When it's really hot I allow bedroom windows as figure will wake up if someone comes through

TheCanyon · 11/06/2022 21:47

I'd leave a hall/bedroom first floor window open if needed (I'm not a window opener by nature) The only burglars we get in our first floor windows are those THOUSANDS of tiny wee flies that amass in my bathroom if I forget the window at night. That's enough for me to shut it!

Ponderingwindow · 11/06/2022 21:48

Burglary is annoying and scary, but far from the worst thing that could happen if someone came through a window. Being a man, your husband has the luxury of not worrying about these things to the same degree. Your opinion matters more.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/06/2022 21:48

I mean, I've never worried about first floor windows. If the window you are concerned about could only be accessed by ladder I wouldn't give it a second thought unless your area is the stomping ground of the Hamburglar.

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 11/06/2022 21:49

YANBU. My colleague woke one night to a bloke trying to climb in through their bedroom window. He’d used their wheelie bin to get up there!

I have a window lock (see picture) that allows you to open a window so much (you can unlock it if you need to).

Chuffinch4 · 11/06/2022 21:50

You’d hate to be me then - I sleep with my bedroom window open all year round, and this time of year we normally have all upstairs windows open overnight.

I suppose it does depend on where you live though, we live quite rurally, small village with low crime rates, can’t remember the last time I heard of a burglary here. Whereas in a city I suppose it’s a lot more likely to happen.

Lazypuppy · 11/06/2022 21:51

We always have 1st floor windows open at night in the summer, i'd roast in summer if windows were closed

HayfeverSniff · 11/06/2022 21:51

Goes to shut bathroom window

XenoBitch · 11/06/2022 21:52

The windows that can be opened in my house are tiny. No one could fit through one.

bloodywhitecat · 11/06/2022 21:53

Mine are all on restrainers but I shut everything bar the bedroom window, I am not too worried about intruders because the restrainers mean they be hard pressed to get in but I hate moths with a passion!

I don't know. I live in the city centre in a first floor flat and have my window wide open 24/7/365 unless I'm out. Although it's not a rough area, burglary is the most common of all types of crime in my neighbourhood according to the local police site.

I still leave it open.

Well he’s right. Burglars really aren’t going to use a ladder to get into an upstairs window when they know that there are unoccupied homes with ground entry available.

I live in ground floor flat. Our bedroom windows are open all year long. I can't see a burglar wanting to climb into our bedroom. But if they did I'd just let them crack on. We have insurance

BaaCake · 11/06/2022 22:03

They don't need a ladder

Your insurance won't cover that

That's really crazy to leave a ground floor window open at night. Insurance is nothing, what about your own peace of mind?

Exactly it's not even about the stuff. They could sneak in and throttle you and stuff.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/06/2022 22:12

We have anti burglary hinges on all our windows. This way we can open them a few inches rather than fully extended (which releases the mechanism) and be relatively safe as they’re a bugger to open. Not unsurmountable but would definitely wake me up.

frazzledasarock · 11/06/2022 22:15

I’m with you OP. I make sure all windows and doors are locked before bed. The windows facing the back garden I leave locked on a slightly open position but still locked so it’s not easy entry, during hotter months.

a friend was home alone when her house got broken into. She was paralysed with fear as she heard them making their way through the rooms in her house. Thankfully they fled when next door came home, thinking it was her house they were returning to.

I wouldn’t want to risk mine or my children's safety. I lock everything at night. Who can guarantee it’s only things in the house an intruder would take?

silentpool · 11/06/2022 22:17

I'm from South Africa. I can't even go to sleep until I've gone round checking all the windows and doors are locked. The front and back doors are permanently locked, with the chain on when I'm home.

I do have my bedroom window open a crack at night but I'm on the first floor and getting up here and opening that window, let alone quietly, would be very difficult.

Thebeastofsleep · 11/06/2022 22:17

They do. But I still don't shut them at night. I like fresh air.

Our insurance covers open windows in occupied rooms.

Do you not worry about someone coming in the window!? I'm ground floor and windows are firmly closed at night, I couldn't sleep if they were open
I don't want someone coming in the window to assault/murder/rape me at night

Anotherdayanother2 · 11/06/2022 22:21

When I first lived in London I had someone come through my first floor window and took my flat mate's electronics. We were not woken up by their entry and only realised when we woke the next morning.

FinallyHere · 11/06/2022 22:23

I just can't imagine sleeping with the windows closed. We have fly screens to keep out the bugs.
