To report someone for tax evasion

WhatsHoppening · 11/06/2022 19:44

An acquaintance doing medical aesthetics and making a bomb but not officially registered as a business and paying no tax despite advertising on social media and posting lots of clients.

This has been going on 3+ Years so not a new act of desperation.

I think it is all of our business. But I do think there are vindictive reports made (as in my parents' case). Which is why I say you must be very sure.
We all pay in and we all withdraw services. It's part of our democracy.

A business does not have to register for vat until their turnover reaches £85,000 in one tax year. My business is not registered, nor am I registered with companies house because I'm a sole trader not a ltd company

Exactly. There’s no general obligation to “register as a business”

I fully appreciate that and I would never report someone to be vindictive and I am sure of the information.

@Janedoe82 you are incorrect, you have to work 450 hours over a three year period to maintain your registration as a nurse. I have colleagues who do one shift every two weeks, some even less.

Not paying tax is everyone’s business. It’s what pays for nurses and paramedics and teachers and benefits and hundreds of other things. It absolutely doesn’t matter if she’s a nurse (I am also a nurse) - if she’s dodging her tax responsibilities, then she should be reported.

@roarfeckingroarr if someone was committing benefit fraud I’d report that too…?

I am asking @Peregrina as as I’ve said before I don’t want to ruin their life BUT I do think they should pay tax like everyone else. I would much prefer a letter from HMRC telling them to get their shit together going forward than a massive fine but obviously it’s not up to me.

Part of being a society instead of a bunch of individuals looking out for ourselves is contributing and reporting illegal behaviour. Her kids go to school, she uses the NHS but doesn’t contribute what she should via tax. It isn’t fair and there’s no excuse.

I do agree with this. We should all be contributing and cheating the tax man is cheating us all.

i used to work in corporate tax and the idea that large companies are evading tax or not paying their way is rubbish. Tax collection is very much focused on them already and their affairs are scrutinized by HMRC. The idea that large companies somehow easily get away without paying tax is a myth.

intwrferingma · 12/06/2022 09:19

@WhatsHoppening sorry I wasn't aiming at you. Just making. A general point. I think the fact you're on here angsting about it means you want to do the right thing

whatwasyournamesorry · 12/06/2022 09:19

No. Don't

She could go to prison

As immoral as tax evasion is, do you want this on your conscience?

Just like politicians then. Good on them I say. You sound jealous of their success, a horrible trait in a person.

Well, obviously, if everyone paid their tax properly then we may have an adequate welfare system, thus reducing the need for food banks.

Surely you understand the link there?

This is literally my point.

Well not really. They’re not this massive success and actually being successful because you aren’t paying enough tax isn’t really true success is it?

I’m all for you reporting, but be prepared that absolutely nothing is likely to be done.

MixedCouple · 12/06/2022 10:01

Mummumtum · 11/06/2022 19:47

How do you know they aren’t paying tax?

Any business registered will show on the.gov website. So a quick search will expose people

HellyR · 12/06/2022 10:14

roarfeckingroarr · 12/06/2022 08:53

Why are you so invested in their life and business? Leave them alone

She's invested enough to post a few posts on MN about someone else. Exactly as you have done.

That analysis would be based on the assumption that the tax is spent on x program's, it could be spent on e.g. Defence, military ect, more tax does not always mean it will automatically be used for x

TarasHarp55 · 12/06/2022 10:24

It's entirely up to you if you report him. Personally, I wouldn't. I should imagine most of the super rich do some kind of tax fiddle. Even our own MPs. But for some reason it doesn't have the same stigma. I'm more mad at the energy companies robbing us blind.

LuaDipa · 12/06/2022 10:29

Janedoe82 · 11/06/2022 22:48

Firstly- she must be working more than one day a week do keep up her registration.
Secondly- unless you are reporting all your teacher colleagues who charge £30 an hour for tutoring on the side I would stay out of it. I suspect this has nothing to do with ‘moral duty’ but jealousy of this women having more money than you.

Sorry but I agree with this.

Personally I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing that I had deliberately caused another person harm.

Rachie1973 · 12/06/2022 10:37

I wouldn’t do it because I just don’t know other peoples circumstances.

it seems spiteful.

Morally, reporting someone for tax evasion is on par with reporting someone for assaulting their wife.

Would those telling the OP to mind their own business feel the same about that?

You only need to practise for a weeks a year to maintain registration

MyfavouriteisA · 12/06/2022 10:41

This is something that should concern us all so it will be interesting if you can update us after you contact HMRC so we know what information is needed about the business, how much you have to disclose about your friend and yourself, and how they explain what the procedure is these days.

JaniceBattersby · 12/06/2022 10:45

I would definitely report them. The most likely outcome is HMRC will investigate then tell her to pay the tax owed or they’ll prosecute.

She’s risking her nursing registration and is undercutting all others doing similar work who pay their dues.

@JaniceBattersby good point about the economics of this - she is likely undercutting others who pay tax. If indeed she is dodging.

Funny how people see told to mind their own business when they suspect someone is committing benefit fraud but not when they're not declaring all the money they've made for the state to take

Exactly what I was thinking.

I reported someone a few years ago. They'd moved in with their partner and had been renting out their own house for more than 3 years and not declared it. They were stupid enough to boast about it in the pub.

I later heard that they'd been investigated and been hit with a big tax bill + penalty. The idiots hadn't realised how easy it would be for HMRC to check ownership and who was paying the council tax, and see if they were the same people. Apparently, they were livid at this intrusion by the "big brother" state, the cheeky fuckers.

I had a lot of trouble keeping a straight face when the story was relayed to me.

mintybobs · 12/06/2022 10:55

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 11/06/2022 22:03

I'd stay out of it. Hopefully they will be caught one day but I can't be arsed with drama or worrying about the consequences of my actions.

Normally I would agree with this but NOT when it comes to medical/cosmetic procedures. This means their insurance might not be valid- imagine if they fcked up someone's face and due to lack of insurance that person couldnt be compensated- thats really very very serious. When you injecting things into people you MUST have all the correct safety procedures otherwise you could be putting people's health at serious risk.
