To suspect this is early menopause?

Aged 43, 2 kids. Always tired and have had treatment for low vitamin D levels. I take Yasmin pill just to ease PMT symptoms. Getting headaches often. Sometimes go to sleep with headache and wake up with one. Always tired, particularly when it's time of the month. Since been on pill nearly out on a stone. I'm alway hot and I'm not a hot perso . I sweat at night lots. All these issues are worse when I'm on my period. GP has said I'm too young for early menopause and was reluctant to test hormones. I'm so fed up especially with weight.

Don't really understand why your GP says 43 is "too young" for early menopause. Mine told me anything below 45 is considered "early menopause". I hit menopause at 43 and was put on HRT straight away.

I agree with this. GP has ordered tests as I'm under 45 but said if I was 45+ she would have automatically started me on HRT. I have the same symptoms as you

Read up the Louise Newson website; lots of good info there and go armed to your GP again. You could quite easily be starting the peri-menopause so be prepared to be pushy and don't be fobbed off with anti depressants as GPs tend to prescribe them when it should be HRT. Good luck!

Aquamarine1029 · 11/06/2022 17:08

It's not early menopause, it's peri-menopause, and you are in no way too young for Peri. Peri can last 10 years or more before full menopause. I highly suggest you go to a doctor who knows what they're talking about, and that is rarely a GP.

Alwayspaintyournails · 11/06/2022 17:15

Your GP is being ridiculous. I had similar symptoms at 35/36 and hormone levels showed peri then symptoms increased with the addition of hot flashes in the day, dizzy spells, periods stopping etc and by 38 my hormones said full blown menopause.

I would try to see someone else and watch the Davina McCall documentaries on C4. The menopause support network on FB is good too.

flairyfairy · 11/06/2022 17:18

I went on HRT for peri menopause at 43 just based on symptoms - no tests - and thankfully a great, informed GP. Change your gp, might be asking if there is one in your practice who specialises in women’s health.

TulipsGarden · 11/06/2022 17:20

Of course it's not too early, 43 is classic peri-menopause age. You need to find a GP with better knowledge, it's a very poorly understood area. I second looking at the Louise Newson site, she's brilliant.

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 11/06/2022 17:21

See a different GP. There will be others at your practice. Take the NICE guidelines with you and do not be fobbed off with antidepressants. Then if that doesn't work email the practice manager and give them the evidence that your treatment doesn't meet the standards set out in the guidelines. They need to provide evidence based treatment so be clear about your symptoms and be clear about the treatment you are requesting, and ask them for the evidence of why it is being refused. If still no luck, change your gp practice. Good luck.

Thanks all. Peri menopause is actually what I meant just couldn't remember the phrase. Every time I go to GP it's a different one. Saw private GP and he said it was too early for menopause.

I just feel soooo tired, fat and fed up.
What does HRT do?

If your GP thinks it isn't anything to do with peri or menopause what do they think is causing your symptoms? What is their plan to help you get back to feeling OK?

Harlechchick · 11/06/2022 17:26

Hi OP, just to say - I'm 45 and I became Post-Menopausal at the age of 40! I then started on HRT at that age, having gone through Peri menopause through my mid- late 30's. My symptoms were extremely similar to to ones you describe.
So, although I appreciate this is an early age for menopause, it is by no means unheard of.
The doctor will not be able to 'diagnose' menopause by checking your hormone levels, as all the blood test does is give a hormone level at the exact moment the blood is taken from your arm. My GP and several subsequent doctors have confirmed this is not a reliable indicator! It is based on symptoms and HRT should be offered for these, regardless of age ( HRT can only be given depending on other contraindications not being present - high BP, history of breast cancer, history of DVT, and many others that evade me at the moment!). Please be persistent and ask if your surgery has a GP who specialises in menopause. Mine did!
Best of luck.

I sweat at nights too, cycles are well out past the 30 days, I am 40, I keep meaning to do something about it, but this is one subject I want to bury my head about. When I went away with my parents for a few days last month, even my Mum said I think you've the dreaded M when I couldn't hide my sauna look - my Mums mum when though a fairly early menopause at 39. But then HRT isn't easy to get here in East Anglia I heard : (

Ragged · 11/06/2022 17:31

Those are also symptoms of thyroid problems.
15 years ago every MNer had a bad thyroid.
Now they're all in Peri. <shrug>

Wedonttalk · 11/06/2022 17:39

GP increased my anti depressants and put me on combined pill for PMT. I've had thyroid checked and all the other possibilities.

Could have written this about myself a year ago. I'm 40. GP thought it was peri but ordered loads of tests anyway. Turned out to be Epstein Barr. Get tests until you get to the bottom of it!!! If they won't see a different GP.

Spanielsarepainless · 11/06/2022 18:26

I started the peri-menopause in my late 30s so get your hormone levels checked. My GP was flabbergasted when my blood test results came back.

MrsDoubtfireForever · 11/06/2022 20:33

I’m turning 44 and counting the day til I’m 45 to get off antidepressants and on to the good stuff. Been like it since 38.

Newmum738 · 11/06/2022 20:37

Agree with other posters. 43 is right for peri-menopause. GPS are often fairly useless and diagnose depression. Mine asked if my mum had early menopause but peri-menopause not the same thing at all. The tried to prescribe ani-depressants which is classic. Ask if there is a GP that specialises in womens health or find a menopause clinic.
