to pay extra for petrol

I had arranged with a friend to collect a small item of furniture from a Facebook seller. Friend's car broke down at the last minute and so the seller kindly offered to deliver it. It wasn't mentionedbut I think I should pay something extra for time/petrol. OH thinks I;m daft but I think it's right to offer. (?)

So if you agree, the next question is, how much? As a non-driver I have no idea! The journey both ways will take around half an hour and the distance is about ten miles. The item of furniture only cost £15, by the way.

I think it would be polite to offer, but if I was in your friends position I wouldn’t accept, I don’t need reimbursed for doing a friend a favour.

Hmrc caps business claims at 45p a mile, to give you an idea. Maybe offer a fiver?

Sirzy · 11/06/2022 14:44

How far is the trip? I would offer something.

ToppTotty · 11/06/2022 14:46

About ten miles...

The friend was taking OP to collect it but her car broke down so the person OP was buying from offered to deliver the item instead. OP isn't asking if she should give her friend money, rather the person she is buying from.

I would chuck an extra fiver on, OP.

10 miles at 180p per litre is about £2, so £4 for the return trip

The seller is the one doing the favour. The OP's friend cannot do it for her.

My friend cancelled so the seller (who I don't know) offered to deliver it.

Give them £20 and tell them to keep the change

monkeysox · 11/06/2022 14:49

I'd give£20

ToppTotty · 11/06/2022 14:50

Looks like a fiver would be considered acceptable. Now to try to find such an ancient artefact in my house! I don't think I've seen real money since March 29 2020. 😃

Thanks all.

Yes you should give them extra, at least a fiver, probably more like £10. They’re travelling 20 miles and giving up at least a half hour of their time..

FlippityFlapperty · 11/06/2022 15:05

Agree on a fiver. It’s kind of them as it’s their time as well as petrol. They clearly need to sell the item and don’t want to lose the chance.

ToppTotty · 11/06/2022 15:07

That's what I was thinking too Flippity.

I'd give a fiver.

ToppTotty · 12/06/2022 03:09

All sorted! I went with an extra fiver. Chap clearly needed the money. Thanks again to all.
