Headache after 5k run

Did a parkrun today, had a drink as I was going round the course and have had drinks since but I've had a headache since finishing. It's not the first time this has happened, puts me off doing them a bit as I spend the rest of the day feeling run down.
Does this happen to anyone else and know why?

YABU

Obsessedwithpizzas · 11/06/2022 12:55

Ok, could you explain why? It's also not really an AIBU question, more looking for advice

Do you eat afterwards as well as rehydrating? That could help. And make sure you drink enough water before you go.

High impact exercise does this to me every time. In my case i dont seem to be able to regulate my body temp very well, i get too hot then get a headache/migraine. I am 50 and haven’t found a solution yet which is a shame as i love exercise.
these days i keep it to low impact workouts like yoga.

I too had a headache this morning after parkrun. It was so hot. Felt better after eating. (which for me is the usual issue)

Sounds like dehydration and/or low blood sugar levels. No big deal. Just drink plenty of water for the rest of the day, eat something carby and you'll be fine.

If you do get a headache, just take a paracetamol and crack on. No need to feel shit for the rest of the day.

Have a look at this and see if any are likely.

Obsessedwithpizzas · 11/06/2022 13:02

Thank you I'll just keep drinking and eat some carbs

I get this too, I find gradually building up my fitness really helps. If I miss a few weeks then I get it again. When I haven’t run or if I had one the last time I ran I make sure I slow down as when I get tried by head lolls back on my neck and when I’m not too tired I keep my head straight/ slightly down - this really seems to help.

Was it very sunny? When I run and it’s sunny, the sun seems to have a bit of a crazy effect on me and I get a migraine. If it looks remotely sunny now I wear a visor or cap and that seems to help.

Obsessedwithpizzas · 11/06/2022 13:06

It was sunny today yes so that's a good point to consider

How far do usually normally run in the week? How fit are you generally?

And what was your heart rate? I get a headache after running if my heartrate has been particulatly high, but only on longer runs 10+ miles though. 5k in running terms isn't that far so it is concerning you feel rundown the rest of the day- it should give you more energy!

Tiredness, dehydration, low blood sugar, bit of overheating in the sun/too bright sunlight, possibly your posture needs a bit of work as you were pushing your head forward and straining your neck.

Suggestions for making it feel better are similar to a hangover -

Bottle of original lucosade
Bacon roll
Sunglasses
Two paracetamol

and then add stretching your upper back and neck on the floor with a foam roller, checking your posture/gait from photos and maybe seeing if your shoes need replacing - if you're heavy heel striking and the shock absorption isn't brilliant, it's very easy to push your head forward and tighten your jaw.
