To not go through insurance company?

I reversed and knocked another cars number plate off- they're saying they need new number plate, holder and theres a slight scuff. I'm thinking it cant cost that much and might be cheaper to just pay them direct? I've never ever done anything like this or been involved in car accident so I'm complete novice!

Honestly just go through your insurance. Only bad things happen when you don't. I'm prepared be told of exceptions though.

Even if you don't claim, you should declare it on renewal.

trevthecat · 11/06/2022 09:57

Nothing to stop them claiming after you have paid them privately

Use insurance when its a major repair - just pay for the new number plate and have the scuff repaired should be less that £100.00

Get some quotes and see.

I had a minor prang-another car went into the back of me at about 5mph. Minor dent in back door. Cheapest quote was £500. We did go out of insurance but it was touch and go whether it was worth it.

Just pay them not worth using insurance

You don’t get to decide. The person you hit does. You can offer to settle without going through the insurance but if they want the job done properly it might cost more than you think. What make and age of car did you hit?

There is an element of risk involved with dealing with privately. The other person could still go to their insurance after you have paid them, and you are obliged by your contract to inform your insurance of any accidents even if you didnt claim. If they find out you didnt in form them it may invalidate your next insurance if you declare no accidents,

But many people do, it is just up to you if you accept the potential (but unlikely) risk.

So I should add the lady has asked if I want to do insurance e or private. I've asked her to get quote. @ChristmasCurry thanks for that, that's not too bad at all and I'll keep that in mind when she gets back to me.
