My 5 year old has been in the wars this week - she has tonsillitis and has been prescribed amoxicillin. Late yesterday afternoon I noticed a tiny scratch she’d had on her wrist looked infected so called the doctors who asked me to send a picture, as it was so late they eventually text me and said they’d sent a prescription to a late night pharmacy. I went to collect and it’s oral flucloxacilin 😩 she’s had a very upset stomach through the night and I remembered I had terrible side effects with it a while ago. Has anyones kiddo been given two separate penicillins at the same time?! I have to space them all out and in total she needs 7 doses a day! I don’t want the side effects to continue and it also doesn’t sit right with me giving her two together.. obviously I won’t be able to speak to the doctor today, I’m tempted to just not give the fluclox this weekend and call them on Monday to ask for an antibiotic cream instead. Just wondered if anyone had been in a similar position with the two.

Good lord
follow doc advice
give both
get a really good probiotic and start her on it today

Shoxfordian · 11/06/2022 08:18

If the doctor said give her both then do that

TheRookie · 11/06/2022 08:23

Can you speak to the Pharmacist? They will know the best thing to do.

TheRookie · 11/06/2022 08:24

The GP may have missed that she's already on amoxicillin

Stickworm · 11/06/2022 08:33

@TheRookie this is my concern. The surgery is huge and has various different doctors, the one we saw for the tonsillitis wasn’t the one that prescribed the flucloxacillin, I’m sure they check for any other medications etc but as it was so late/rushed I’m wondering if that may have happened on this occasion. She’s complained of stomach pains all night and now she has just vomited everywhere which she wasn’t doing on the amoxicillin so I’m definitely going to speak to the pharmacist before giving her any more!

If you're worried, speak to a pharmacist or 111 to confirm.

But get something very nice tasting in as a treat! I can't swallow tablets, and liquid amoxicillin is fine but liquid flucloxacillin is the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted. I don't know how you'd get a child to take it - I had to do it like a small shot, and even then would retch and gag.

Poor wee mite! Our pharmacist is brilliant, hope yours is good too.

Moosake · 11/06/2022 08:36

Yes speak to pharmacist before giving anymore to check it's OK to give both together.

Hoardasurass · 11/06/2022 08:56

I have been on 2 different penicillin based antibiotics both 4 times a day 1 with food and 1 on an empty stomach (so no food for 2 hours before and 1 hour after) it was hellish as was having to set alarms at night and ended up taking a dose of 1 or the other every 3 hours 😪
The problem is that the cut got infected whilst she was already on amoxicillin which means that the bacteria (in the cut) are resistant to amoxicillin and will not get better without a different antibiotic hence the 2nd prescription for a different antibiotic which should hopefully heal the infection in the cut if not they will have to do a swab test and prescribe something much stronger that targets the specific bacteria.
I know that this may sound scary but unfortunately with the overperscription of antibiotics many bacteria have become resistant to the most commonly used antibiotics (like amoxicillin) so it's becoming more common to use multiple antibiotics and do swap tests. Also different antibiotics work better for some types of infections than others .
Hope that this helps.

Hoardasurass · 11/06/2022 08:58

Swab tests not swap obviously bloody auto correct

Stickworm · 11/06/2022 09:01

Thanks so much @Hoardasurass although she has only taken three doses of amoxicillin (two yesterday and one this morning) as also started those yesterday so I’m not sure if the cut is resistant or not. It actually looks a lot better this morning - I cleaned it thoroughly and used antibacterial cream plus a gauze as recommended originally by the pharmacist- anyway I’m going to call them now to see what they say 👍🏻

I was going to ask if the GP knew she was taking another AB! They are notorious for causing stomach reactions.

Your poor dd. I'd take her off the second one and ask a pharmacist's advice.

Stickworm · 11/06/2022 19:43

Thanks all! Pharmacist suggested halving the dose so 2.5ml 4 x a day instead of 5ml and she’s had 3 doses of that so far today with no ill reaction and she’s full of beans!
