To say remove your bloody rubbish from your front garden!

It's not even a front garden. Just a bit of grass at the front of the house, next to the porch.

The house in front of me, to the side, has loads of rubbish building up there.

This is a new build estate and it looks lovely. Then you walk by this neighbour and they have things like crisp packets on the grass at the front? Empty plastic bottles?

It's so chaotic. Last week, I walked by and picked stuff up. Binned it, in my own bin as it was bin day. Neighbour rushed out to ask what I was doing? I said oh just picking these up for you! I was really nice about it. Didn't really bother me at all

She said 'my son left that there. He just drops stuff when he gets out the car'

I said oh haha, something my son does too! I'm forever picking stuff up'

She said 'can you leave it please' so I did... thought it was an odd response.

Fast forward to this week and even more rubbish is there and some of it blowing near my house!!

She came out when I was binning it, again bin day and on my property actually, she said 'I thought I said to leave it there? It's no problem just being there'

I said it's on my property and it's no trouble. She said 'it isn't yours to clean up' then went inside and shut the door.

AIBU? Why the fuck is she acting like this?!

I have a neighbour like this, she hoards rubbish and pets and her house is absolutely disgusting. There are rats all over our estate because of the filth from her house.

watcherintherye · 11/06/2022 08:27

One of my close friend in a hoarder. She would say or think something like

'I'll solder those crisp bags together and make a thermal blanket and keep it in the car for emergencies

That’s either one of the strangest things I’ve read on MN, or a genius recycling idea. I’m not sure which!

StopStartStop · 11/06/2022 08:30

If you want to pop round to remove rubbish and cut the grass, OP, I'd be very grateful. Wouldn't pay or make you a cup of tea, but I'd think well of you. Thanks.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/06/2022 08:31

Tell her "I saw a rat on your property yesterday so I'm not happy to leave rubbish building up so close to my house".

I don't actually think you can insist but it's worth a try.

lasttimeyoucalledon · 11/06/2022 09:12

Her son sounds like an arsehole btw, who does that?

Her son is about 5/6 by the looks of it

Sorry I thought he was late teens or early 20s and it was his own car he was dumping rubbish out of.

Yes, your neighbour should be teaching him to put his rubbish in the bin.

That's how she was making out when she spoke! So I'm not surprised people have got that impression

She thinks (knows) you are judging her, and reacted defensively.
If the rubbish upsets you, just carry on picking up the litter.

SlatsandFlaps · 11/06/2022 09:58

I would look on the Land Registry, find out if it's owned by a Housing Association and if so, report them.
I rent my new build home from a Housing Association (my garden is kept clean & tidy!) and once had a letter from them, warning about keeping my garden nice, as one of the homeowners saw my garden wheelie bin (which had blown over during storm Eunice!! I hadn't had chance to pick it up yet as I was in hospital!!!) on it's side and seemingly RAN to their phone to make a complaint! 🙄
My point is that HA's do act upon complaints from homeowners and pretty swiftly it seems.
If they own their property then I would complain to environmental health. I'll probably be called a 'busy body' on here but rubbish strewn about a front garden will reflect on everybody on the street and will massively reduce your saleability should you wish to sell up

lasttimeyoucalledon · 11/06/2022 11:16

I think Shared Ownership

Someone else was complaining the other week as she has a horse trailer and it was blocking about 3 houses from getting in?!

She just doesn’t like the fact that you are inadvertently telling her that she should actually be doing it.

we had a neighbour who had a corner of their property covered in stuff/old junk that was spilling onto the pavement.. It was an eye sore and I was tempted to put a sign on it saying “NICE JUNK” but one day it was all cleared and some nice stones put in it’s place. I mentioned this to DH and he then said that he had complained to the council and sent them a picture so it obviously worked.

Mrsherdwick · 11/06/2022 12:41

She’s just lazy isn’t she. I live on a new build estate and am a volunteer litter picker for the local council (get nice hi-vis yellow jacket, litter hoop and litter grabber)- get me , I know how to live the high life! Anyway, if I was doing my usual patrol and saw what you did I would also have picked it up so yanbu.

A girl can dream! It's so annoying, she's bringing this little area down. Everywhere else is so fresh and clean. Argh

I don't understand why people are like this? Why not just bend down and pick it up. As for wanting to stop you picking up what was on your drive - she has no right to stop that! I cleared a load of rubbish in the drainage ditch outside one house - 2 black sacks - the owner of the house did not object and it was not on their land although had come off their land. If it is not on their own land they have no right to stop you removing litter. If it is on their land then you can't remove it but it is still very annoying.

ScootsMcHoy · 11/06/2022 16:01

I also thought the son was about twenty and was doing this when he got out of his own car.Shock She's got no hope if she can't even manage him when he's five.

minipie · 11/06/2022 16:06

Please keep tidying it and if she tells you again to stop, ask her why?

I would love to know the answer!

Moosake · 11/06/2022 16:07

Oh!! Well in that case she's being silly

Rinoachicken · 11/06/2022 16:59

If she complains again when you collect litter that’s on yours or public land, tell her that while she may choose to live amongst landfill, you and try neighbours don’t, so will continue to remove the rubbish that has blown off her property.

Rinoachicken · 11/06/2022 16:59

Oh and I’d be reporting her for littering/allowing her litter to spread off her property, whatever

Rinoachicken · 11/06/2022 17:01

Because surely it’s an environmental health issue. Isn’t that why everyone has to have a wheelie bin or equivalent, rather than the old bin bags on the streets of old? To prevent litter being spread all around the place and attracting vermin?

ElenaSt · 11/06/2022 17:03

Place a dead rat on top of the rubbish and she might take action.

My youngest is 9 but he gets told take your rubbish out put it in the bin everytime (he has sen so it hasn't sank in yet it has been years) it's a teaching moment surely mom isn't a bin the FLOOR isn't a bin the car isn't a bin THIS IS THE BIN

I'm not the only one surely 🤣

StoneofDestiny · 11/06/2022 17:13

Report the littering. You are too polite - tell her you don't want litter on your property and she should pick it up. Better still, teach her child that it's not ok to litter the neighbourhood.
