Naked toddler in large store

alltoomuchrightnow · 10/06/2022 20:51

I work in a well known superstore (think flat packs type...)
The toddler wasn't running around..was seated in trolley, totally bare apart from one small towel over a shoulder. The first thing I saw was the little bare bum on seat when helped the mother with something.
Didn't bother me..just surprised but assumed the little one had had an accident.
Told co-worker later and they berated me for not saying anything. Said mother could have gone next door first (supermarket) and bought the child some cheap clothes.
Yes I'd considered some weirdo might have clocked the child but I didn't want to draw attention nor embarrass the mum. It wasn't harming anyone and the store was fairly quiet.
Was I wrong? Obviously if child had been running around I'd have had to say something as a safeguarding issue..but not when seated quietly in trolley.
I'm prepared to hear that I'm wrong though!
Also some customers travel hours to get to this store so it might not have been the case she could have just popped home.

I wouldn’t do it, as in I’d have put pants on them, but I wouldn’t feel the need to make a scene about it either. My DC don’t like wearing clothes often (sensory issues). As I said I would have insisted on underwear for hygiene reasons, but I can’t get het up about this.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/06/2022 21:03

Who cares?! It’s up to the mother.

I spose for hygiene reasons you could have asked she sat the baby on the towel, but that’s about it.

worraliberty · 10/06/2022 21:04

I wouldn't have had a thought about it one way or another really, other than they might've been a bit uncomfortable sitting in the trolley.

Winterfellismyhome · 10/06/2022 21:05

Why cant you just say Ikea

SleepingStandingUp · 10/06/2022 21:06

My only thought was how old and wee. If they're not going to wee everywhere, then I don't think making a big scene and Mom then carrying naked kid is helpful. I'm on your side.

caringcarer · 10/06/2022 21:06

She should have sat child on towel at very least. Really should have had pants or nappy on. Unfair to next child who sits in that trolly. Plus mother should have preserved child's dignity.

alanabennett · 10/06/2022 21:08

I think it's grim. Especially as "toddler" on MN can mean anything from 1-3 years old.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/06/2022 21:09

Sorry to previous posters but that isn’t on. Pants (or nappy) at least. ) I can still remember feeling mortified when I was brought down from my cot in the summer before I was 3 years old to see family who had turned up unexpectedly one evening. I was naked and wanted to curl up/run away.

59 now.

Haha, totally what I was thinking

I think that depends on the kids. My dc will run around naked anywhere and doesn’t give a crap who sees. Age range 4 to 7, 3 of them

JuneJubilee · 10/06/2022 21:15

no way I'd have done it. If I didn't have a change of clothes (unlikely as I'm more of a 2 kitchen sinks type person!!) and was about to leave anyway, I'd have put a towel in the trolley first.

as a shopper it wouldn't have bothered me & it wouldn't bother me to put my toddler in the seat next . It's a bare bum, not nuclear waste!!

I think your colleague was wrong. I think you were right to ignore ut, not your child not your issue. Certainly not your business to lecture about paedophiles.

stalking big flat pack furniture stores isn't really their thing I'm sure.

Happens all the time on here, I don't know what people think is going to happen. There was a post during the week about someone shopping in supermarkets M and S...so Morrison's and Sainsbury's then.

alltoomuchrightnow · 10/06/2022 21:33

Older . 2-3.
Not meant to name them outright in social media, I've been told before! (by them)

I wish there was a like button

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 10/06/2022 21:40

I'm normally totally ok with small children and nudity - but in Ikea?! No. Not on.

I'm surprised actually - normally there's lots of folk anguishing over paedophiles having a look at a nude child.

I think it's pretty gross to have bare bums in a furniture store. I appreciate this mum knows she hasn't had the kid sitting where they shouldn't, but other shoppers don't.

Beelezebub · 10/06/2022 21:41

Toddler needed underwear

Georgeskitchen · 10/06/2022 21:43

All well and good until the toddler decides to take a dump in the trolley

Isitsixoclockalready · 10/06/2022 21:44

I know that people seem compelled to see the other side of literally every post on here but that does seem unusual.

HailAdrian · 10/06/2022 21:45

I dunno, my autistic child is often naked, I'm so used to being around an unclothed child I might not even register it. 😅

Yodaisawally · 10/06/2022 22:06

I am very lax but I don't toddler / baby poo on my shopping. That's not 'usual'.

pattihews · 10/06/2022 22:07

No, it isn't normal for a child to be naked in a shop. I'm astonished that anyone thinks it might be. There are hygiene issues and there are issues about the child's dignity and privacy. I have no issue at all with children being naked at home or on beaches, but a shop is different. On a purely practical level it's unfair that you put store staff in the position of having to mop up your child's poo if they have an accident.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 10/06/2022 22:10

I'd be surprised to see a naked DC in a trolley but I wouldn't say anything about it.
