AIBU to think that it's all well and good to bring in new policy that allows better saving for RTB for council tenants, but that it doesn't help people who REALLY need help? If you're in a council property it is still vastly cheaper than private rent (over 50/60% where I live). What about the millions of young people living with their parents into their early and mid 30s who can't afford rent (this is me), can't get a mortgage as a single person even on an OK salary. Am I missing the mark here? I'm not saying everyone in a council property has it easy, if course not, however I don't think it's the right way to deal with the housing crisis at all....

lonelyapple · 10/06/2022 14:25

The Government don't give a shit about private renters or people who are net contributors.

BrownieBanana · 10/06/2022 14:25

Looking at my post I haven't worded it very sensitively. Apologies. When I say REALLY need help, I just mean that don't have access to any affordable property at all.

I have friends who are suicidal over cost of living, my brother is falling apart as am I. Just no words anymore.

Help to buy? Isn't that aimed exactly at the people you are talking about?

inmyslippers · 10/06/2022 14:28

Private renters seem bottom of pile sadly

Honest to goodness I can’t understand why people get themselves into such a state over money. There was a local man that did exactly that killed himself over owing £19,000 and I can’t comprehend it tell the banks to shove it up their arse they can’t put you in prison.

I know that sounds flippant but there’s been lots of time in my life when I’ve not had any money Ive literally been scraping by and it comes around it’s cyclone and you just have to keep putting 1 foot in front of the other and keep going.

No I'm talking about Right to Buy. Even Help to Buy is far out of most young people's reach. It's a farce

I just don't really understand it.
Surely it would make more sense to concentrate on making more council houses available

Don't even know how to respond to this ridiculous post

I agree it's not the right way to deal with the housing crisis. I think we need more social housing, not less.

I'm a net contributor, home owner and not struggling but have been on benefits (many years ago) so don't wish it on anyone. I think if they can buy a house that's great for them, but unfortunately it will probably be at the expense of those even more vulnerable.

I don't agree with some of the sentiment I've seen on MN recently along the lines of 'why should non workers get x, y and z'. I work hard but certainly wouldn't begrudge anything to those who can't, those who care for disabled kids or the many other circumstances that results in people having to live off such a pittance.

It doesn't sound flippant, just really uninformed, ignorant and a bit stupid.

carefullycourageous · 10/06/2022 14:32

The government want private rents to stay very high - many major private landlords are their donors. They don't give a shit about the costs for renters.

This policy will make rents even higher as it reduces the stock of rented properties.

They are deliberately making a bad situation worse!

Of course. I'm on universal credit. I don't begrudge anyone with a genuine need. I don't even go there. I just despair at how hard I feel like the next few years are going to be. I've lived in a room with my son as a lodger for nearly 3 years. Can't afford to move. It's a real fucker.

Fucking hell @Nothappyatwork I can't even formulate a reply to that.

I totally agree with you op.

This news just in, Boris and his gang of lying corrupt millionaire chums don't actually care about any of us proles.

frydae · 10/06/2022 14:34

Well if that’s why are you want to interpret it and that’s what you want to take from it fair enough But I can’t imagine somebody falling apart over money it’s just fucking ridiculous.

It's not my interpretation that's wrong...

HogDogKetchup · 10/06/2022 14:34

I agree OP. IMO ultimately those who RTB just inflate the market when they sell their property 5 years on and they can then join the other homeowners.

Even as a landlord I feel deeply uncomfortable with how much rent has risen. It’s depressing.

Tell that to the folks who are going without food so their children can eat. You sound utterly deluded.

If this rtb goes the way he said that properties sold will be replaced with new stock it would hopefully improve the availability of social housing. If it works a long term occupied property will leave the pool but a new empty one will be added enabling someone from the waiting list to be housed.

lonelyapple · 10/06/2022 14:35

easyday · 10/06/2022 14:27

Help to buy? Isn't that aimed exactly at the people you are talking about?

Unlike "Right to Buy" (which offers huge discounts, up to 70% off the market price of homes), "Help to Buy" doesn't give discounts and the homes that qualify for Help to Buy are not those occupied by tenants with secure tenancies in already low cost housing. With "Help to Buy" it all has to be paid back. Private renters get a shit deal, no security of tenure and much higher rents. It is a two tier system. I'm surprised it's even legal to discriminate in this way.

Exactly this

Yodaisawally · 10/06/2022 14:37

We've been here before with RTB, it decimated the social housing stock and will do again. I work in this sector, Homes England and the levelling up fund is a farce. They can't deliver, don't have the funding and those at the bottom will get pushed further down.

BrownieBanana · 10/06/2022 14:38

Where I live there are nearly 5k people on the housing list waiting for houses and 150 houses available. That's a lot of houses they need to build. It's awful.

And those new houses will costs approx 200k to build after selling one for 130k. It’s bonkers and totally unworkable. That’s why it didn’t happen when Osbourne wanted it to.
