6 week old fussy for ages after feeds ? AIBU about this ?

I can't work out if it's normal that my six week old fusses for at least an hour after feeds ? ( formula ).

He cries, goes red and is generally unhappy.

I can't do much, but hold him, then try putting him down. Burp him, give him his dummy etc. sometimes he continues fussing until he seems hungry again after a couple of hours ( exhausting ). Other times, he eventually falls asleep for a bit.

He hardly ever goes more than two hours without feeding.

I'm not sure if it's just usual baby stuff or if there's a problem. I think he definitely has reflux. So I keep him upright for a while after feeding etc. he arches his back and flails his arms and legs about during feedings and after. He's just generally unsettled for ages after feeding. Are all babies like that ? I remember my daughter used to be like that occasionally, but not as often.

I suppose my question is - when does it go from being just normal newborn baby behaviour, to something they need help for ?

Of course all babies fuss. I just feel like he fusses quite a lot. But maybe I'm wrong and it's just normal ?

It sounds like he's allergic to the milk I'd go gp ASAP. As he may have lactose problems the only reason he be upset after milk is allergy or colic as in bad gas and wind...DO NOT USE COLIC RELIEF STUFF this will literally make it worse. Try lay him with his tummy on your thigh Rick gently back and forth while rubbing his back he may have really bad wind but I'd defiantly go doctors see ifnits the milk as that's a big indication as it always after a feed don't want to cause him emotional distress and can be easily fixed x

mum2boys1504 · 10/06/2022 14:11

Also he could be super hungry but the flailing is a definitely a sign he's in pain bless him

babysharkdudududu · 10/06/2022 14:11

So I've been to the GP and I have talked to the HV- they say as long as he's gaining weight he's fine... he's gaining weight.

Hi my son suffers severe cows milk allergy I was lucky enough to get diagnosed when he was just 3 weeks old, he was prescribed one milk and it wasn't working he would be unsettled for non stop screaming for 3 hours at least, I contacted doctors who told me it was a tummy bug, it turned out my gut instinct was right and milk wasn't working it took me until the new year to find a prescription milk that worked for him, if there are any cma known in your family then push for help honestly don't give up

babysharkdudududu · 10/06/2022 14:31

@ann122 so I've tried aptimil pepti the other day, on the advice of a private doctor. He screamed all night. So I went back to regular formula. Now he's still unsettled after most feeds, but not as bad as after pepti.

It's difficult my lb was on cow and gate and then we tried cow and gate comfort but it didn't help, it's only since he was out on a lacto free milk it helped he's now 8months old and in 2months time we try introducing milk to his system again, my only advice is you know your baby better then anyone else follow your gut instinct, also my lb was gaining weight fine when he was reacting to the milk, there's other symptoms apart from not gaining weight xx

mum2boys1504 · 10/06/2022 16:18

Hmm. They can fob you off alot. I would say he's gassy or in some discomfort u know your baby and u should trust your instincts...yes he's gaining weight but if he arching his back then he's in pain I would try the tummy on your shoulder after every feed and on your thigh it pushes the gas out. Maybe try a different type of milk for collic baby no baby should be upset like that after milk. If youre unsure u go back to the Dr's xx

mum2boys1504 · 10/06/2022 16:22

Screaming after feeding is not normal and he can't be subjected to that pain and upset not good for you or him try a pharmacy for advice. He allergic to the milk and u shouldn't let the Dr fob you off x gl

JasmineFlowering · 10/06/2022 16:24

Has he been checked for a tongue tie?

That's what I thought. But I've been doubting myself, as I got so royally fobbed off by the GP. So I thought I would ask here for opinions.

I'm seeing a private doc who's trying to work out what's wrong. But when you pay, you also aren't always sure about that either.

I know it's an obvious question but are you really winding him quite aggressively? They can take quite a good back rubbing. Ds like to be sat up with my hand under his chin and my other hand straightening his spine.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/06/2022 17:18

Tried Infacol?

I can always try more I guess. How long on average do you need to do it ?

It was a good twenty mins of being upright and back rubbing after a feed.

Are the tests ok on the bottles, is he sucking in too much air? Have you tried a different brand?

I would say I do that kind of length and then leave him upright even longer after.. I use mam anti colic. I haven't tried others, as they worked with my daughter. Maybe I could try dr brown or something !
