Is buying a second Sleepyhead sensible or wasteful?

DC1 got loads of use out of her Sleepyhead - slept in it every night (inside her Next To Me and then in her main cot when she moved to her own room), not to mention lots of use during the day too.

We're expecting DC2 and I was planning to use the existing Sleepyhead and just get a new cover. It's in great condition, been stored well (and DC1 wasn't a sickly baby so it's not stained or anything).

DH is outraged we're not buying a brand new Sleepyhead for DC2 - his argument is it's an important item the baby will use everyday for months and should be clean and fresh for new baby. He's a second child himself and hated getting hand-me-downs and openly admitted he doesn't want DC2 to feel like that if we can afford it (I'm the youngest of 4 kids and well used to sharing/getting hand-me-downs and just think it's wasteful if we don't totally need it).

AIBU for wanting to re-use it?

YANBU.
Put the money in a savings account and use it to buy something new specially for the baby when they are old enough to care?
Plus - they may well hate the sleepyhead. Second children exist to show you the error of your ways in thinking you knew how to parent 😂

YABU for using a sleeping pod. They are not recommended for safe sleep and reducing the risk of SIDS. Your baby is safest in a clear cot with a blanket tucked in or a well fitting sleeping bag of the appropriate tog, no toys, no cot bumpers.

carefullycourageous · 09/06/2022 18:40

YANBU. Your DH is carrying some 2nd child baggage there.

Musicalmaestro · 09/06/2022 18:42

I thought it was recommended to have a new mattress for a baby, so I wouldn’t want a used one.

Halfarsedjingler · 09/06/2022 18:43

Please look at the safer sleep website and reconsider your use of them all together. They are dangerous and should not be on sale.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 09/06/2022 18:44

Sleepheads are not considered to be safe but yes you need new mattresses for each child.

I thought it was recommended that you have a new to your family mattress so you know it has not been in a smoking household?

Happy to be advised but didn't think it was unreasonable to reuse a moses basket for example.

carefullycourageous · 09/06/2022 18:53

From Lullaby Trust on mattresses:

It can be common to use a second-hand mattress either from friends and family, or from your previous children. There is some research that found an increased chance of SIDS when using a second-hand mattress brought in from outside of the family home, although the link is not yet proven.

To help reduce this risk, if you are using a second-hand mattress make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, with no rips or tears and is in good condition. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep your baby sleeping safely. The bit I was referring to on mattresses is brought in from outside of the family home

carefullycourageous · 09/06/2022 18:59

Hmm, they are clearly a bit uncertain on this though as later they say: Generally we would advise it is safest to have a new mattress for each baby, though we know this is not always possible.

Vivi0 · 09/06/2022 19:02

I kept all DS1’s clothes and dressed DS2 in them. But I did buy a new Sleepyhead.

mout · 09/06/2022 19:05

yabu to use them at all when they go against safe sleep guidelines

Happytap · 09/06/2022 19:07

We washed ours and got a new cover

LadyApplejack · 09/06/2022 19:14

I'd reuse it, no question.

CreepyDibillo · 09/06/2022 19:28

We reused it. Like your family though, DC1 wasn't a sicky baby at all.

However....

Plus - they may well hate the sleepyhead. Second children exist to show you the error of your ways in thinking you knew how to parent 😂

this made me laugh so much as it was so true for us!

DH is probably BU. But some people are used to having everything new, or see being able to do that as a status symbol or just something nice to do for their kids. It can be hard to educate them on that (in terms of money, waste, whether children should expect everything new all the time, etc.) If you can't afford it, then be insistent. If you can, then decide whether it's worth arguing over it. Pick your battles wisely.

It's good for children IMO to have some second hand things, although it's best to make sure they can having something new from time to time, and the eldest can have hand-me-downs from NCT Sales, cousins, charity shops as well, to even things out. Your little baby won't have a clue about whether their Sleepyhead was new or not, so this doesn't apply to the Sleepyhead question.

I don't know what a Sleepyhead is, but if it is something that has a sort of mattress, well it's advised that new babies have a new mattress. Does this apply? Either way, you could sell on the old one (or give it away), someone will want/need it.

ForestFae · 09/06/2022 19:59

He’s being ridiculous. I don’t understand people who get hung up on everything being new.

Darbs76 · 09/06/2022 20:03

He is being silly but afraid I agree with PP who said these are dangerous. You shouldn’t use anything like this as they are not recommended

Happyplace88 · 09/06/2022 20:14

They are strongly contraindicated with safe sleep guidance so YABU to use one at all. Why take a risk? It’s your baby’s life. The mind boggles.

WombatStewForTea · 09/06/2022 20:16

Yabu. They're fucking dangerous and we should go the same way as the USA and ban them!

Satsumaonaplate · 09/06/2022 20:17

These are not recommended by the lullaby trust!!! They have been linked to SIDS. id bin your first one asap !!

Sodthatforagameofsoldiers · 09/06/2022 20:21

We re-used ours for all 3 children. I think your DH is being a bit ridiculous. What does want to do with the current sleepyhead, throw it away?

We got new cotbed mattresses for each child but they were very well used by the time the next child was the size for the cotbed.

Lo0ps · 09/06/2022 20:24

As others have said, they are dangerous and shouldn't be used at all.

Jojobees · 09/06/2022 20:25

Please reconsider using one at all.
they are so dangerous

Hugasauras · 09/06/2022 20:31

They are really expensive so I wouldn't buy a second for the sake of it! We still have both of ours from DD1, the first one and the grande, and plan to use them again this time round too.

Franca123 · 09/06/2022 20:35

I bought a second hand one and used it for two babies. Then sold it on. You're DH must be made of money.
