How deceptive is your appearance?

Inspired by another thread - as when I read the title I thought this would be the subject.

how deceptive is your daily appearance to your natural self?

My hair is naturally wavy, so I straighten or curl it when I’m going out/in the office. I invested in really good skincare so I now wear less makeup - but would never consider going out without any on.

I don’t think I look drastically different from my normal state - just a bit more polished and put together.

Almost no deception here.

I mean, a bra stops me having boobs on my navel.

I have visible eyelashes but only because I wear mascara.

I think that's it day-to-day.

Is that the only makeup you wear? Mascara?

basically none 🤣

naturally curly hair so it’s either up or down in that style. Level of bird nest bun or pony vibe depends on how much effort I put into putting it

The only makeup I wear is eyeliner or mascara but not daily.

I guess my biggest deception is my bra makes my boobs look pre 3 kids

doadeer · 09/06/2022 11:14

Not at all now, but didn't used to be to case.

I love being makeup free now. I have grown to love my face and who I am. It's me. I don't need to see my natural face as unfinished.

I normally wear quite relaxed clothing and usually a sports bra or no bra.

Occasionally straight my hair, it's so long down to my waist that it's usually in loose waves.

I used to wear a lot of makeup and wear corporate dresses. Seems like a lifetime away but it was only 7 years or so

doadeer · 09/06/2022 11:15

Oh I have painted toes and wear lots of ankle and toe jewellery

ArabeI · 09/06/2022 11:16

No real difference really. Though reading back it might be more than I first thought.

I wear concealer if I'm looking a bit tired, then a dusting of powder, over SPF, moisturiser and serum, so there's no shine, then a lip balm. I might use an eyeliner on the upper water line occasionally. I might use a cc cream if a bad, or tired, skin day. I don't wear mascara much during the day. I have fair eyelashes but I quite like them. Oh, I do wear a blusher quite often (super pale!) but day blusher is usually Benefit Dandelion, which is quite subtle. Nars Orgasm otherwise!

In the evening I'll wear more makeup; mascara etc

ArabeI · 09/06/2022 11:18

Prompted by a pp, I do use nail polish and toes are always painted.

I also don't blow dry or straighten my hair very often at all. I leave it to its natural waves for most part.

Why is it deception? Most adults know that we do these stuff to ourselves. I think you'd need to live under a rock to not realize what we do (make up, shapewear, hair extensions, eyelash extensions, botox etc).
Why not say, it's deception when you condition your hair or orthodontics and brushing flossing because then we can't tell the true nature of your diet and genetics. What about if you calorie count and work out to stay slim despite genetics?

I am genuinely fascinated by this and do not intend my comment in a mean spirited way. I think it's a good question. Can we agree what we mean by natural self first of all?

Daenerys77 · 09/06/2022 11:21

Very. I look like the archetypal sweet little old lady. Until I open my mouth....

Holmgang · 09/06/2022 11:24

I shave my legs, bikini line and armpits
I wear a bit of makeup (foundation, blusher, mascara-you can still see my skin through the foundation it just evens it out a bit)
I dye my hair to cover the greys but I’m rubbish at doing it regularly enough so I’m quite often grey for months inbetween
I paint my toenails in the summer.

My partner keeps showing me pictures of women who look like a completely different person when made up, I wish I had a fraction of their talent! I can’t even style my hair nicely!

1000yellowdaisies · 09/06/2022 11:54

On a day to day basis the only stuff i wear is mascara and moisturiser. I have blonde hair that is pretty obviously not natural so i don't think thats deceptive, and whitened teeth....
I don't think make up is deceptive as such...
Although one of my kids got into my make up bag last week and i after that i couldn't find my mascara so went to work withoutanything on... the amount of people who told me i look tired or ill was borderline insulting! :)

It’s just a discussion dear. I’m not enacting a law to call it deceptive. It’s really not that deep.

I brush my hair... I don't wear make up or specifically style my hair regularly. So it's pretty much the same at home and outside.

greenhebeaww · 09/06/2022 12:23

I look like a nerd and people expect me to be intelligent .. until I start speaking 🤓

Mount2Climb · 09/06/2022 12:35

No it's not that deep I just thought it was an interesting choice of words and I too was trying to have a discussion. Nevermind! 😉

LeftFootForward · 09/06/2022 13:03

I'd say my appearance is quite deceptive.

I work in an arts type role and dress a little hippyish, Dm's, woolly jumpers, little make up. I'm not a complete slob, I scrub up well, but definitely have an arty vibe.

People have often assumed me to be a vegetarian, I'm not and never have been.

People also often assume a I'm a massive leftie. I voted for New Labour but stopped > 10 years ago and vote Conservative now largely because of identity politics and all the Labour TRAs insanity.

I think people have strong stereotypical ideas about people and it's difficult to see beyond that for many.

pedropony76 · 10/06/2022 22:30

Mine isn’t deceptive at all. I thread my eyebrows and have shellac on my toes, that’s about it. I’ve never known how to do make up so I never wear it

weeducky · 10/06/2022 22:40

Loads. When my DC was born I wondered if they'd know who I was without makeup (they did, shockingly)

ForestFae · 10/06/2022 22:56

I either wear no makeup, or full makeup including false eyelashes - my look is gothic/alternative. There’s no inbetween for me, it’s all or nothing.

TheOGCCL · 10/06/2022 23:23

I do loads and am glad to do it as makes me feel better about myself. But I think others do not actually notice. They have a general impression of you and if you turned up one day without mascara, hair straightened etc, they would barely notice (maybe think you look a bit tired at a push). We are the ones who obsess over ourselves. I've cut my hair shorter and shorter and it takes a seriously drastic change for anyone to comment.

user7637293 · 10/06/2022 23:25

Sometimes I straighten my hair but apart from that I don't wear make up in the office.

So, very little deception I'd say.

user7637293 · 10/06/2022 23:27

But like @ForestFae , if I'm going out-out it's the works for me- false eyelashes, hair extensions in, acrylic nails, tonnes of makeup and jewellery. I look like a completely different person.

But day-to-day, not much! There's not much in between.
