To take dc out of school for a day to go to legoland?

dc really wants to go to legoland but it gets so so busy on weekends and school holidays.
eldest is autistic and wouldn’t cope with it when it’s busy and wouldn’t have a good time at all.
we used to go in term time before he started school and it’s much quieter and easier to manage.
he doesn’t really spend much of his school time actually in the classroom anyway so he won’t be missing out on much learning because he doesn’t really do any school work at school
Would I be unreasonable? It’s not exactly educational but I don’t think he’d be able to go otherwise

Do it. Take them out for holidays, day trips and other life enriching experiences that make them well rounded people. Life is more the school.

Just be honest and tell the school you're taking him out and why. Don't lie and claim he's sick.

I don’t personally think it makes any difference at all.

When the first Harry Potter film came out I knew the cinema was going to be mobbed after school hours so I took my son out of school for the afternoon saying he had a dental appointment and we went to a matinee performance and there was only about four other people in the whole of the cinema so we were able to watch the film and interrupted by screaming wailing kids

One day out of school won't matter.

However, a word of warning - it will still be busy. When I went on an INSET day it wasn't an INSET day everywhere and there were large school parties there.

Ruffelo · 09/06/2022 12:25

For one day, do it! Have fun!

Afterfire · 09/06/2022 12:30

I often do stuff like this with Ds who has autism. Otherwise we’d just never get to go anywhere as he hates places when they’re busy. Experiences and holidays are just as important as school and the odd bit of time off here and there never hurt anyone. Despite what all the pearl clutchers will say on here.

I would and did. Always a fortnights term tome holiday here and there. I only stopped when they reached GCSE years.

RaspberryParfait · 09/06/2022 12:37

Absolutely do it. Not just now, do it every year. He’ll have far more happy memories of Legoland or holidays etc than school IME.

Currently on holiday in Turkey. Have taken DC 11 out of school as his adult brother is ASD and wouldn’t cope with it being jam packed.

Cost £3k less than if we’d gone in late July/August. Don’t need to be up at the crack of dawn to reserve sun beds, no queues for the restaurants, pool not busy, very few screaming DC. It’s bliss and we’ll do it next year.

No. I wouldn't do it. He won't get 100% attendance if you take him out now. Wait till after they've done the certificates. I don't know what the cut off date is.

In a way, I think you make it easier for the school if you say he's sick because then they can just authorise it 🤐

My child would rather a day at legoland than a piece of paper for attendance

Absolutely do it. I just want to warn you that it may be not as quiet as you hope though. We went on a school day last year at the very beginning of July and it was packed! mainly with LOTS of year 6 leavers trips. They were all wearing 2021 leavers hoodies etc and from their ages were clearly in year 6. There were about 20 sets of different school kids running around with teachers etc.We enjoyed it but it was really busy and often having to wait 30 minutes plus for rides.

I’ve taken my son (autistic) out of school before to take him to a museum on a quiet weekday. He couldn’t have gone otherwise. I think if you’re doing it every other week it’s a no-no but once in a while is just not a big issue. Obviously différent if you’re pulling him out of his maths GCSE to go shopping at Liverpool one then the cinema but a primary school kid having a day out that he’d otherwise not be able to do? Go for it.

Tree543 · 09/06/2022 12:54

I did this 3 weeks ago with my yr6 ds. It was brilliant hardly any queues. A couple of school trips but there may be more of these the later you leave it. I would go midweek as it woukd be quieter then.
The queues are so horrendous there at weekend and school holidays it made such a difference.

That’s how I see it. I am all for honesty but sometimes it’s just asking for trouble.

Of course you take him!!

This is what a happy life is all about op. How lovely for him - have a great time. Pick a sunny day and fast passes :)

Trinity65 · 09/06/2022 13:25

Do It
I was going to do that with my youngest two, years ago now, and I never did
Wish I had done .

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/06/2022 13:28

This is very interesting. I have an ADHD child who wouldn’t cope with the queues and crowds - not would I really!

On the flip side, he really needs all the school time he can get as he struggles to keep up.

Hadnt considered this option but considering it now.
