To no longer enjoy shopping

i used to love shopping. The clothes / products were nice. Good quality. Shops were well presented, enjoyable for a browse. Customer service was so friendly. I could have a nice spree, without breaking the bank. Take myself out for lunch.

Now... The shops are talking to me. Shouting at me. Just shut up! TK Maxx tannoy guy, I’m looking at you... I want to shop in peace. Now, H&M as well, everywhere is at it. The rails are like a jumble sale. Any time I want to just buy something there are questions. They need to see my phone. No simple hello.

Anything decent is so bloody expensive now. And mostly rubbish! Time was you’d get leather shoes & handbags. Wool coats & suits. Silk dresses. Cotton summer clothes. Flattering cuts. Nice detail. Jewellery & accessories that lasted.

I still have really good stuff from the last decade or two. Sometimes I’ll see nice gear from the 90s / Noughties in charity shops & worry that it’s all a bit Trinny & Susannah now. But, no. I won’t part with my wool cardigans or proper winter coats. They’re classics, anyway.

Online shopping just isn’t the same. But, I just don’t think shopping is what it used to be. Read a thread here recently about town centres / high streets dying out. And all of the great shops that are no more... I really miss the experience of shopping. It’s just not fun anymore.

It actually doesn't bother me anymore as I've reached middle age - I only ever buy from three places now anyway: one is online only and the other two I tend to order click and collect and try on in store, so I can get an instant refund if it's unsuitable.

I've got so used to sofa shopping now that actual shopping is exhausting in comparison!

Yeah I'm kind of the same - mostly do all of mine online now, don't really enjoy going round the shops.

I think we had reached the peak in the 90s and it’s been downhill ever since.

Yes, I think this is true. I remember The Clothes Show Live at NEC and Clothes Show on BBC being watched and discussed afterwards at work on the Monday back in the late 80s.

Yes absolutely awful

Used to always be able to buy lovely stuff

I absolutely hate 'High Street' shopping, but I am totally addicted to charity shops. It's the nervous thrill and excitement of knowing that if you don't buy it right there, right then, it will be gone forever 5 minutes later😄

I had a really nice trip to our local town recently and tried on quite a bit in Zara and Mango - it was knackering but I did buy a couple of bits and might not have ordered one of the things if I was purely online shopping. Mango is a bit more sophisticated than Zara I suppose, but similar price range. It was nice to just have a try-on without the hassle of ordering, arranging delivery, then organising returns then waiting for the refunds.
