I'll start: my mum would have died five years before I was born if it hadn't been for the NHS. She contracted a rare virus and was in hospital for months, just a couple of years after the NHS was set up. Her parents would never have been able to afford the private fees.

I have a disability and got free treatment for it on the NHS. I would never have been able to afford the treatment I needed privately. My brother would have died of pneumonia at six weeks.

Anyone else?

@Attractinglife

How do you think the NHS should improve waiting times?

I'm on the other thread too but yes, the NHS is not all bad. There are a lot of good people and top notch care. The good doesn't excuse the bad and the bad doesn't erase the good. 🤷

My current GP surgery are amazing. (As opposed to the one that I mentioned on the other thread) You can always talk to someone. I just showed up once in crisis and they found me a little private space to sit and a Dr came as soon as possible.

The receptionists are lovely. They bend over backwards to help. Ditto pharmacist.

I had the Dr show up unannounced twice. Once because he was at the nursing home doing covid jabs and had some spare and wondered if I wanted one.

The other time to give me a bollocking for buying cystitis meds online Blush

They do home visits to me because I'm housebound, check on me regularly by phone. I've never felt forgotten by them, dismissed or a burden.

They have made mistakes. It's human. But they apologise and they put it right.

I'm never moving out of their area 😁

Both my babies needed increased monitoring towards the end of my pregnancies, all was fine in the end, thank god, but only because of the continued support and work of the nhs staff!!

Knowing I can get immediate care for my children (and myself & other loved ones) without having to worry about get a bill for thousands of £££ is the biggest comfort in the world!

My cousin in America had to sell her house and move in with her mum, just to be able to get her daughter the medical care she needed when she was born with a heart defect. 😢

Not very dramatic but when I had long covid during the first lock down my GP was amazing.
She rang every week to check up me, did every test she could organise and really reassured me. As soon as they were available she got me into a long covid clinic.
Before I had her as my GP I was told I had anxiety not covid, that I needed to buck up, that there was nothing wrong with me.
she saved my sanity and my health.

Sorry but of course there are positives of having healthcare for all rather than no healthcare for all. There will always be positive stories, given the scale.

The NHS is akin to our national religion. It is the sacred cow that politician must worship. Billions upon billions of our money is poured in and this is model isn't questioned despite a drumbeat of failings, wastage and poor outcomes.

Staff looked after my husband beautifully whilst on life support, and for several days after it was turned off. It still is a huge comfort to me, nine years later.

Topgub · 09/06/2022 15:49

@roarfeckingroarr

Surely you could flip that?

There will always be negatives given the scale.

The model is continually questioned from what I see.

Mostly by people who resent having to pay for something they think they don't need

Ive had 2 beautiful babies born in NHS hospitals. 1 led to complications for me, a lot of blood loss. I was lucky I didn't need a transfusion.

I'm 1 of 4 children, we all needed support when we were born. Without NHS NICU there's a good chance none of us would be here today.

I've had a number of surgeries both privately & on the NHS and I can honestly say the care I've had on the NHS has been brilliant.
