Simply that. I'm thinking copper as I'd love to get rid of the hormones. Any suggestions or advice welcomed. Not had one before but had enough of the pill and its unwanted side effects.

Hey, OP.

I haven't had the mirena, but I had the copper one. I had the standard post-insertion bleeding for a few weeks and then all was fine for about 6 months, then it got to the point that I was bleeding for 3 weeks of every month, so I had to remove it and everything settled down. It might work for you though!

WhackingPhoenix · 07/06/2022 20:51

I had the Mirena which was AMAZING as it stopped my periods for the whole time I had it.

The IUD will likely make your periods longer and heavier, which is the only downside.

florenceandthemac · 07/06/2022 21:00

I've had the copper for nearly 5 years and it's been great. Due to have it taken out this August

AnotherVice · 07/06/2022 21:01

I too loved the copper as no hormones. Had no problems.

OwlBasket · 07/06/2022 21:08

I had the copper coil for 10 years (changed as necessary, obviously). Had a nightmare with all sorts of hormonal methods before that. Was absolutely the least worst contraception I ever used, I’d certainly recommend it. I had none of the more common side effects, and my body only started to get annoyed with it after 8 or so years IIRC. Well worth a crack. Also it’s cheaper than the mirena so much less resistance from GPs to take it out if you don’t get on with it.

I’m sterilised now so no worries or side effects to deal with any more. Well worth considering in the longer term IME.

HiKelsey · 07/06/2022 21:17

I'd have the copper if you've previously struggled with hormone contraceptives. I had the copper before I had my DD and it was much better than the mirena. Had the mirena after DD because if endometriosis and was told the hormones wouldn't affect me. However I've been producing and leaking milk every month for 2 weeks around my period, endometriosis pain coming back, bloating, sickness, nausea and they've cut the strings too short so I'm waiting to get it removed. My DD is 2.5 years old and was only breastfed for a month and I'm not pregnant. I have adverse reactions to hormone contraceptives so the copper was perfect for me

I had the copper coil fitted between having DC...I was 33ish at the time. Bloody hideous...periods were like waterfalls so that came out pretty sharpish. Mirena coil fitted as part of hrt in late 40s...minor issues but much better than the copper one; for me anyway.

Moosake · 07/06/2022 21:20

I'd go for one of the ones with the lower amount of hormones in. Jaydess I think one is called.

PolkaDotMankini · 07/06/2022 21:21

I've had a copper coil for the last 9 years. I have irregular periods anyway and they've got heavier, but other than that it's been trouble-free. It's due out next year and I'm thinking of getting the Mirena in the hope that it will stop my periods altogether.

MirandaWest · 07/06/2022 21:24

I’m on my third Mirena coil now - have had no problems with them. Having no periods is a very beneficial side effect.

galacticpixels · 07/06/2022 21:26

I've only had one type so I can't compare but I have Kyleena which is similar to Mirena but lower hormones. I've had it for a year. I got it in after a decade of hell on various pills and I've had none of the side effects that I used to have on the pill. My periods have also stopped.

The only downside for me was that it took a long time to settle down. I had bad cramps for months.

JoandLily · 07/06/2022 21:29

I've had both and I would 1 million percent recommend mirena. No periods and no side effects.
The copper made my periods so heavy and painful

joan12 · 07/06/2022 21:29

I have a copper one and it has been great. Heavier periods for about three months, then settled down and no probs since.

As an aside though, I understood it could stay in for ten years?

joan12 · 07/06/2022 21:30

I also just hated anything hormonal though, realise might be different for others

Yes same experience as me.

I have a 5 year one. The nurse said there was a 5 and 10 year one, and if I recall correctly, I'm sure she said I had the 5 year one due to a narrow cervix.
Typical, of all the narrow things I could have on my body, it's a narrow cervix...

Manth0914 · 07/06/2022 23:04

Thank you ladies. These replies are really helpful. I've been on the pill for 20 years and I think it's time to say goodbye to fake hormones!
