To ask for horror books suitable for my eldest

Hi, my 13 year old dd has recently gotten into watching creepy/horror films and more recently has expressed interest in wanting to read horror books. She's done Neil gaiman type stuff when she was younger and is now moving on to more "grown up" books

At the moment she has read Carrie by Stephen King which she really liked and a book by someone called Grady Hendricks which she said was good.

Obviously it's horror so I don't expect it to be squeaky clean but nothing too insane for a 13 year old please 😂

If her reading is up to it, why not start her on the old gothic horror classics? The original Bram Stoker's Dracula is a fantastic book and a fairly easy read. Frankenstein, and Dr Jeykel and Mr Hyde could be ok too.

Gosh, my sons were reading Stephen King and Dean koontz well before 13, in fact in primary school. I did the same, Dennis Wheatley, John Wyndham etc....

Rubyupbeat · 08/06/2022 13:32

James herbert and Susan Hill are good reads too.

You’ve had some great suggestions so far! Specific to young adults I would also recommend Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake, The Carrow Haunt by Darcy Coates, and the Blood of Eden trilogy by Julie Kagawa.

I’d suggest looking at Goodreads as well - it’s great for keeping track of what you have read/liked, and the book reviews are usually very helpful.

The Gone series by Michael Grant mentioned by a PP is fab, it is just like Stephen King without the sex.

Thatswhyimacat · 08/06/2022 13:39

The Six Stories series - about an unsolved mysteries podcast with a horror angle.

For a 13 year old, I would definitely recommend the 'point horror' books. My young teen absolutely loved them. they are aimed at young adults and all stories involve teenagers as main characters. I don't think you can buy any new now though, so may have to look for second hand. I bought alot from the world of books site
www.wob.com/en-gb/books/various/point-horror-collection/9780590134811?gclid=CjwKCAjwkYGVBhArEiwA4sZLuGTEfNKrdE3dXnnGmm-mnjFCm5YDDbTC_e7FaIZrWBMVakq7k6OpshoCcUQQAvD_BwE

There are loads of titles, so sure some will be available.

My teen girls also really liked the last vampire series by christopher pike.

I loved (early) Stephen king at that age, carrie, Salem's lot, Christine, thinner, misery and the short story collection ' night shift'. All teenager friendly...

I wouldn't worry too much about sex scenes in Stephen King books, he's not great at them and they don't tend to last very long! I loved Needful Things, Misery, Christine and The Dead Zone when I was younger (still do!)

i second point horror i was obsessed with them as a young teen then graduated onto Anne Rice around 15 or 16 i read rats and lair as a teen as well and a good wedge of steven king although tommy knockers and pet cemetary were a bit much

Haunted by James Herbert. His best book by far. Very well written with an excellent twist.
The Stand- Stephen King
The Enemy- Charlie Higson. Bloody amazing. My teens loved them. I read the first and found it really creepy.
I am Legend- Richard Mathieson
If she likes King she should try Joe Hill. Hes Kings son and imho a better writer. He also includes the King multiverse in his books so great to try alongside King. His best are
Horns( Some sexual violence in this but not graphic)
21st century ghosts( anthology)
And NOS4R2- has a very dark fairytale/King feel about it( and is part of the King multiverse)

it's actually a YA rather than adult but have you tried Into the Grey by Celine Kiernan? It is set in Ireland in the 1970s

Also her Victorian ghost novel Resonance (i got really freaked out by it)
