To hand in my notice while off sick?

Ok, here's my situation:

I was off work last week, during which time I interviewed for a new job with a different company and was offered the role.

I've verbally accepted this job, am waiting for the formal offer to arrive.

Returned to my current job yesterday, only to test positive for covid. Am off work today as I'm feeling pretty rubbish.

If the formal offer arrives this week (hoping it will be emailed/posted asap) and I'm still off sick is it unreasonable to still have The Conversation with my boss? I want to get the ball rolling obviously and provide a start date because I'm really looking forward to starting the new post.

I feel quite guilty for a number of reasons - I've just been off on leave, now off sick, and will be dropping a bit of a bombshell in terms of handing in my notice as I've been with this company for only about 6 months.

The team I work with are nice, so I feel bad that I'm mucking them about like this, but I really can't help the timing of it all... certainly wouldn't have chosen to catch covid this week! 😣

So - AIBU - to hand in notice as soon as I can in less than perfect circumstances?

Or

AINBU - just get on with it, that's life and it's just business 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nothing to stop you handing in your notice when you are off sick, I cannot see any particular moral reason no to either.

Moosake · 07/06/2022 11:46

Absolutely fine

PatsyJStone · 07/06/2022 11:46

It's unfortunate but you need to do it sooner, best for everyone concerned.

EVHead · 07/06/2022 11:48

That’s life - go for it.

Mindymomo · 07/06/2022 11:50

Agree your timing isn’t great, but cannot be helped, but I would wait until you receive the formal offer before handing in notice. Hope you start feeling better soon.

Arucanafeather · 07/06/2022 11:53

Honestly, don’t give it another thought. Do it as soon as you get your offer in writing etc. Congratulations on your new job. Hope you feel better soon.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 07/06/2022 11:54

Meh. I have been in a similar situation. I telephoned my boss before sending the email to ‘soften’ it somewhat.

Crankley · 07/06/2022 11:56

If I were your employers I would be interested to know how you attended an interview while you were ill. If you were well enough to attend an interview why weren't you well enough to go back to work?

OP was on leave for the interview. Came back and then caught covid and is now off sick.

a job is a business transaction, nothing more. Your employer would drop you like a hot stone if you became too expensive/business dropped off etc.....do what you need to do, politely and without guilt

PuppyMonkey · 07/06/2022 12:23

Yup, if your employer suddenly decided to let you go or make you redundant etc, I doubt anyone would be saying: “Ah but she’s got Covid now, best wait until she’s back at work.”

SilkieChick · 07/06/2022 12:26

Ok phew! Thanks for the reassurance everyone. You're right, I'm probably overthinking it. I would usually be a bit more pragmatic but it's sort of an unusual set of circumstances.

And thanks to those offering congrats - I'm excited about the new job, it's a company I've wanted to work with for some time and I couldn't resist the chance to go for this role.

Now just need to get that offer in writing ..(and get rid of the bloody virus!)

Assume you went for your interview whilst on leave rather than off sick? I think I misread your OP to start.

I don't think you have much choice OP - you need to get ball rolling, as you say, you may not be able to return for a week or more so best have the conversation now. Also you might be worrying about it until you do it .

shinynewapple22 · 07/06/2022 12:27

Ah sorry yes you need to wait for formal offer in writing .

SilkieChick · 07/06/2022 12:43

Yes, just to be clear - I interviewed while on leave, I've only just fallen ill in the past day or so. I didn't actually even know I'd have an interview when I booked leave, it's just the way it worked out.

At least while I'm off sick I don't have to have those awkward conversations when you know you're leaving, but they don't know yet that you're leaving... Blush I hope no one thinks it's a little 'too convenient' when they find out - but I have the positive covid tests to prove it! Confused

I totally get why you feel that way but less is more in these situations. Don’t explain or try and persuade them you actually did have covid. Accept some people might think it’s convenient (a la Andrew during Jubilee weekend) but it really doesn’t matter if they do think that. You know the truth and that’s ok.

balalake · 07/06/2022 13:20

Fine to do so, you are off for reasons of self-isolation. I'd understand reluctance were it a non-Covid reason, or something such as a bad back, but not otherwise.

Crankley · 07/06/2022 13:45

Sorry, my mistake OP, I misread your first post.

If I were your employer, I'd be very interested in why I was paying someone with such a lack of comprehension skills when the vast majority of the public would be better skilled.

If they don't believe you and you're well enough then you'll just have to go in
