The new version sounds ugly and doesn’t make sense.

When people stopped being taught correct grammar in school....

If anything it us “me and x” rather than myself.

That should be “it is” not “it us”

Stupid people think it sounds more formal.

For some reason the English language has developed a horror of being direct, too, so you end up with all kinds of convoluted, ugly sentences.

“Would you be needing any starters for yourselves at all today?”

Anything to avoid asking a direct question.

Sounds more proper and posh and important innit.

I think some people get mixed up about when to use 'me and x' and when to use 'x and I' and somewhere there along came 'myself' and that sounds even more poshly so go for that, must be correct.

But it isn't. But language evolves, some of it dies out, some of it goes on its holidays to America and then gets shipped back shiny and new to be grumped about by those who didn't notice. The way people communicate changes too, from written to verbal back to written but in a weird made up shorthand 'txt spk' format to a equally weird phonetic 'u no wt a mean' format (ick that hurt to write).

It's the way of the world and the species. But some of it gives me the boak.

I blame estate agents and insurance salesmen

Either people don't know when to use I or me or they think myself/yourself sounds posh. It doesn't.

Welcome to Scotland.

This really grates on me. I think people think it sounds formal/polite but it makes absolutely no sense.

I once got an email that said “I have been trying to get through to yourselves but have been unable to reach anyone. Please telephone myself on….”

I mean, just what???

PenOrPencil · 06/06/2022 21:58

People think that myself sounds educated and posh. Unfortunately it is just the opposite.
