Bit unsure as to why i was told I had a job asap and now not a clue what's going on

I'm a supply teacher in Maths. There's a school within walking distance from me, and an acquaintance works there as head of dept in Maths.
I've always preferred supply due to its flexibility but wanted to try for a longer term role.
It turned out that they were looking for a long term Maths teacher at her school, perfect!
So I applied through the agency, who had liaised with the head of dept. Apparently they were really keen to get me in on cover, I could start as soon as references cleared etc.
I even refused other work as I expected to have this until end of July.

Anyway all cleared and ready to start, i had been talking about it on WhatsApp with this head of dept/ex colleague.
I have 2 days off for a wedding end of June, during school hours but the agency assured me this wouldn't be an issue.

So I'm due to start anytime now..the agency say they've told the school this and the school said "They'll know more later in the week".

I noticed the colleague had stopped asking me about it, whereas a couple of weeks back she was asking me if I had still been interested.

I thought I'd send her a msg to ask if she had any info regarding when they needed me to start. She replied with some weird message saying she didn't know and she was 'very busy' atm.
She also said 'anyway, don't you have those days off in June?" As if it were some sort of excuse.

Surely if they're 'really busy' they'll need an extra pair of hands asap?
I just tried to reply with a friendly 'no worries'
And she said 'i'll keep you in the loop. All the best!"

Just very odd and I am disappointed. Wish I hadn't refused other work but that's my fault.
It seems like they don't want me anymore, don't know what I've done wrong. Fair enough if they had seen me teach and decided I'm not right for the school but that's not the case.

Feel like I've wasted my time.

My update from the agency is that the school "doesn't know how long it's for and what it's for" even though I was apparently due to start yesterday full time until July.
Anyway I'm not waiting for them, I've managed to get a school lined up for September hopefully and I'll do short term work until them

It won’t be you - the school will have filled the position with someone they know. Agencies are notorious for stringing people along and getting hopes up.

That's not at all true re agencies. We really so have better things to do and it's not the agency being evasive here.

Sounds like your mate should have kept their mouth shut because they either don't need someone or they can fill it without paying agency rates and wanted confirmation that person was available before they let you know.

Trust me if the agency could get you a start date, they would.

I've been with agencies a couple of years now and I totally agree- if there is a role for you, you will start as soon as you can, usually within a week.
The situation that's happening to me is the biggest load of codswallop I've ever heard
