AIBU to be disappointed (spa day)?

I'll kick this off by stating that this is a total first world "problem" so please excuse my rant as I know there's a lot worse going on in the world. I'd just be interested to know if anyone else would feel the same or if I'm just being a brat?

At the very beginning of the pandemic I got an award at work. These are usually in the form of an online shop where you can buy items from loads of different retailers (including the ability to get vouchers for the likes of Amazon or John Lewis to be used at leisure). This award, however, was different as it was for an "experience", which had to be booked via an online "concierge" service, who would hand pick the booking for you. Unlike the usual rewards you weren't able to see the monetary value.

I didn't book anything until recently, as Covid restrictions meant that the vast majority of experiences were unavailable and it was mostly "Learn French from home" (which with two small children at home in lockdown, while trying to WFH and home-school, was not really what I wanted to use a reward for!).

Anyway I finally got around to booking a spa day recently and went through the online booking process with my concierge - basically filling out a form with how far I'd be willing to travel, and allergies, the kinds of treatments I'd like, etc. Throughout this process I had no idea of the budget so it was a bit awkward as I didn't know what it was reasonable to request.

I was offered a spa day (5 hours) in a city centre (no parking!) at a small Thai beauty spa type place. Less of a day spa, more of a beauty salon. The treatments included sounded nice enough, reviews relatively reasonable, no food included though (will be there 11am-4pm). Also no spa facilities (pool, steam room etc). It was also right at the maximum distance I'd said I was willing to travel, and not the easiest to get to (I'll have to park and ride it or get an Uber due to the lack of city centre parking). Anyway, I decided to go for it, as I assumed it was the best deal to be found within whatever budget the concierge was working with (and I don't like being an awkward customer!). The package it turns out costs £325, which I thought was pretty generous.

But within the booking confirmation email I was sent £600(!!!) worth of vouchers for the spa. There was a note to say the remaining vouchers could be used (up until Nov this year) on anything I wanted to book at the spa (they're non-transferable as in my name).

Now I will probably sound like a spoiled brat (hence the name change!), but I am a bit irritated. With a budget of £600 I could have booked myself into a really lovely day spa (which is 6 minutes from my house) and with a package that includes lunch, some lovely treatments, and use of the spa facilities too. That would still have come in well below budget at £370, been so much more convenient, and it would have been much easier to use any remaining vouchers up as won't take an hour to get there and another hour to get back. A quick Google using my postcode (which the concierge had access to) actually produced a plethora of closer options in fact.

The way the concierge service was presented made it sound like they would go above an beyond to find the perfect package for me, but I'm actually left feeling like they just booked the first thing that popped up and didn't consider location or budget at all, or comfort for that matter (lack of food).

I also know I'm unlikely to use the remaining vouchers due to the difficulty getting to the spa. I was prepared to sort out the travel (about an hour each way due to traffic) for a one off really special treat, but as a single mum-of-two I know I'll be unlikely to find an opportunity to find another day to go back and use the remaining vouchers. I was really looking forward to a special day of self care, for the first time in many, many years, but now I'm just feeling a bit annoyed. £600 is a LOT of money to me and the idea of wasting any of the vouchers doesn't sit right with me at all.

I dunno - am I being unreasonable? I fear I might be but this has left a sour taste in my mouth!

You should have asked HR what the value of the experience was so you could pick with more clarity.

SilverTotoro · 06/06/2022 15:33

Is there a way you can feed back to your company (perhaps through Hr) it sounds like the service is a bit of a rip off so they’d probably be grateful to know your experience.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 06/06/2022 15:33

Can you not get in contact with the concierge service and ask if you can rearrange the booking?

EmilyBolton · 06/06/2022 15:34

I’d feel very miffed. I’d go back to the company who set up concierge and complain and say you want them to cancel as it is not the stress free experience you hoped for but accepted as you thought budgeted was very limited but now see 6ou could have much better options.mid question why the concierge booked that one? Is there some sort of back hander going on for instance? Say you can’t use vouchers and feel you have been scammed …complain.complain and if not joy tell your company how disappointed you are so they don’t use that service again. God knows why they didn’t just give you the money in first place. Unless your company is fiddling it so they don’t pay out what they bled you to believe would be your special award?

xogossipgirlxo · 06/06/2022 15:35

I voted YANBU, because something that supposed to be a pleasurable experience sounds like a lot of fuss.

SeaDogs · 06/06/2022 15:35

So it cost £370 but you received vouchers to the value of £600 which could only be spent at that spa? I'd assume that it's all priced accordingly- the vouchers say £600 but actually the treatments are priced so that for your £600 you only get £370 of value, if that. I don't think it's comparable to what you could get for £600 somewhere else- it's just done to make you think you're getting a good deal.

I agree this sort of "concierge" service is a huge rip off.

adlitem · 06/06/2022 15:36

That is annoying. Can you go back and ask them to cancel/ rearrange?
Chances are that the service has certain preferred suppliers and take a commission themselves.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 06/06/2022 15:37

Try rebooking with the concierge service, but also tell your work that the method they chose to ‘reward’ was bad value for money and a poor service.

CottonSock · 06/06/2022 15:37

That is totally shit. What a waste of time this service is.

pippinsleftleg · 06/06/2022 15:37

YANBU - that’s ridiculous. Can it be cancelled?

Tollystar · 06/06/2022 15:39

Yes, go back to the concierge service and ask them for something else. I expect the way it works is that businesses offer discounts to the concierge, so they'vejust gone with who ever offered them the best discount within your parameters, I.e. your company have paid concierge £600. Concierge "for free" get you £600 worth of experience, but only pay the spa £400. The £200 is their profit.

dammit88 · 06/06/2022 15:43

I think you are being a bit unreasonable - its unlikely that that amount was actually paid - its probably that they get good deals because they send lots of business that way.

PuppyMonkey · 06/06/2022 15:46

Cancel it and try and get £600 in John Lewis vouchers instead. Grin

Wizzbangfizz · 06/06/2022 15:50

Yanbu, but equally you should have just asked how much. I’m sure once you explain then it can be sorted. Our company has one of these useless concierge services and they don’t book things logically as you might expect.

SiobhanSharpe · 06/06/2022 15:58

For £600 you could book an overnight stay in loads of decent spas with use of all the facilities and some treatments too. I'd go back to the concierge service and complain -- and tell them you'll also be giving feedback to your employer as you think they are getting poor value for the service they're paying for.
i would also mention Trustpilot , Feefo and any others you can think of.
TBH it does sound like a bit if a scam.

Clymene · 06/06/2022 15:59

I would go back to the concierge service and ask to cancel. And I would also tell HR.

That doesn't sound like a spa day - that's going to a salon. And it sounds a bit crap.

yourestandingonmyneck · 06/06/2022 15:59

That's ridiculous.

Get straight back onto the consierge and tell that this place is not suitable, you want something closer to home with spa facilities and food.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/06/2022 16:07

That's shit. How come you can't have the Amazon/JL vouchers so you can use them at your leisure, or just use them for groceries etc, and then mentally repurpose the cash saved for something of your choosing?

I'd be really disappointed with that, because to me, the spa is the steam rooms, jacuzzis, nice lunch etc and I never have treatments. Plus I'd be really annoyed at the inconvenience of the location.

I'd complain, because to be honest, I'd rather have nothing than the type of spa experience that this concierge place has arranged for you.

kimblerk · 06/06/2022 16:18

you can’t go 5 hours without food?

DisgruntledPelican · 06/06/2022 16:20

kimblerk · 06/06/2022 16:18

you can’t go 5 hours without food?

You’ve missed the point by a wide margin

Wizzbangfizz · 06/06/2022 16:22

Also a Thai spa? Sounds like a dodgy manicure place to me.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/06/2022 16:26

Can you spend the excess in lotions and potions? Seems crazy money though for a few treatments and no actual chilling or food

JacquelineCarlyle · 06/06/2022 16:27

I agree with pps Op - that sounds crap and you're not being unreasonable by being miffed about it. I'd complain to HR and the concierge service and get something re-booked.

Your company wanted you to have a lovely experience as a reward, so they need to know that the service they're using provides the exact opposite of that.

Hope you're able to get it sorted.

RenegadeMatron · 06/06/2022 16:28

So the concierge is basically a middle-man who faffs around and makes the whole experience markedly worse?

Hardly worth it, is it?

I would definitely be getting back in touch and asking them to rearrange. Why wouldn’t you?!

BarbaraofSeville · 06/06/2022 16:30

Bloody hell, for £600 you can have 2 nights in a luxury room with full board, treatments and 2 days access to all spa facilities, gym, classes and outdoor activities at Ragdale Hall.

www.ragdalehall.co.uk/spa-breaks/taster-2-night-spa-break/

I'm sure the city centre beauty salon is lovely, but you'd have to come out of there looking like a supermodel for it to be worth £600 for 5 hours.
