Or should I be really pleased - that I couldn't buy my usual free-range organic chicken today because of Hugh snog-anyone Whittingstall and Jamie fat-tongue Oliver....

Waitrose was CLEANED OUT of free range chickens

I had to buy bits not a whole one

And all the normal chickens were left behind

Good really isn't it, but I bet it doesn't last.

I'd better get mine delivered tomorrow! Haven't had one for 2 weeks on the trot now.

CountessDracula · 13/01/2008 23:29

They were talking about it on the terraces at Arsenal v Brum yesterday

It has clearly made a difference

Let#s see if it lasts

I was in Tescos today and could not get any decent chicken, didn't make the connection!

Roll on 4 for a fiver. I bet they'll shift them then.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 13/01/2008 23:45

LL - I hope it was a properly reared pheasant and not from a badly-run shoot.

WowOoo · 13/01/2008 23:47

I KNOW! Shocking. Defrosted our last lot today. Then got blooming duck and made lush stuff from mag recipe. (half price at sainsbury's -get them quickly!) There's more to life than chicken you know.... Duck is so nice. Boiled with spices etc and then crispy fried with watercress and beansprouts. took ages to prep coriander, ginger, garlic etc but was v happy. Ds ate teeny bit too..!

Twinklemegan · 13/01/2008 23:50

Do people just buy chicken every week as a matter of course then? I mean it's not like it's a special occasion or anything so I'm mystified as to why any chicken should be sold out.

WowOoo · 13/01/2008 23:51

Oh, am meant to make some asian soup with water from boiling herbs and spices etc. noodles tomorrow wey hey!
If you ever get the chance to kill your own animal do it! I did when 15 and have never looked back. (although went veggie for some time after living near a farm!)

Quattrocento · 13/01/2008 23:52

I buy two chickens every week, roast them and use them for various purposes through the week. So yes I do think that people buy them week in week out.

Twinklemegan · 13/01/2008 23:53

We need to all start thinking of meat as a luxury again, because that's what it is and it should be priced accordingly. Killing animals was never for routine meals, day in and day out, and nor should it be.

I know, also could not get my usual 'burd' and also ordered 'beef' curry, yummy!
Saved me cooking as well

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 13/01/2008 23:59

LL - an old bird with rough, horny feet?

Did you roast it or do something else?

LL - Sounds like roadkill! Or not well hung.

Do you think everyone will clear the shops of free-range chickens really early in the week to avoid disappointment next weekend?

Q. Will there be lots of well-heeled ladies sleeping outside Waitrose to ensure their perfect Sunday roast?
A. No, they have a little woman in the village to do that.

Scramble · 14/01/2008 00:12

LOL I did notice tesco still trying to push the 2 for £5 chickens, on the end of an ailse with large neon signs and half naked show ladies, still no takers .
