To be worried about DD weight

ohnoohnoo · 06/06/2022 14:37

Have posted a couple of times previously about my daughter (5) getting poorly constantly for the past few months. Finally got an appt at the drs who are sending her for blood tests. However they mentioned that she has not put any weight on since she was last weighed by them last summer, she's actually lost a bit. Is that normal? Shouldn't she be bigger at 5 than she was at 4?

bumping

What kind of poorly has she been? If it’s gastro that would explain the weight

JerichoGirl · 06/06/2022 16:10

Yes she should be bigger at 5 than 4 and I would be worried too. But you are doing exactly the right thing in getting her to a dr. That is the best you can do. Has she had the bloods done yet?

A mixture of everything, colds, tonsillitis, urine infections, gastroenteritis. Since February she hasn't had about 5 consecutive days of feeling well. She's also had a lot of antibiotics in that time

Not normal, no. I think this is something you’ll need to talk about with the doctor alongside discussing the blood test results. Sorry this is happening - must be stressful. I’m glad your DD is being seen, and sounds like will get good care!

Triffid1 · 06/06/2022 16:11

I would expect a child to gain weight over a year, yes - unless she was noticeably overweight previously. DS weighs less now than he did 2 years ago even though he's a lot taller. But he was significantly overweight and is now in proportion and slim.

It's good they're sending her for blood tests. They'll take a look at a lot of things and try to work out what's going on. If she's been unwell a lot, weight loss isn't that surprising as she's unlikely to feel like eating etc.

TheOriginalEmu · 06/06/2022 16:12

Has she grown? Kids can get longer and thinner. But if she’s not eating well then that accounts of why she’s dropped a bit.

ohnoohnoo · 06/06/2022 16:14

She hasn't had the blood tests yet, we only got referred for them today so hopefully it will be soon.

She has grown in height, but she also eats the same amount as what most 5 year olds do. She's always been very slim, she's still in age 3 clothing most of the time. We sometimes have to get bigger because they will be too short in the legs for her but then she can't keep them up round her waist.

I don't think it's necessarily abnormal as such - she's been ill with various different things over a period of months so it's maybe not surprising that she's lost some weight - but it's noteworthy, if you see what I mean. I think it's something they will take into account when they're investigating whether anything's wrong, in case it's another piece of the puzzle.

When I was a teenager I had a spate of recurring health issues and I remember the GP noting down that I appeared very pale. Being pale in itself doesn't indicate illness (it's my natural skin tone) but if my blood tests had come back showing that my iron levels were low or something, that's when the paleness would have become of interest. Similar situation with your DD I think - her weight alone probably isn't of tremendous concern, but it might prove relevant if they're looking to diagnose her with something and are looking at the symptoms.

I would ask them about it when her blood test results come in.

It's good that she's having blood tests. Hopefully she's just been a bit rundown and all will be fine, but those checks should at least give you some reassurance.

ohnoohnoo · 06/06/2022 16:34

@10HailMarys thank you that's a very helpful way of looking at it. I can't help but worry about it all but I'm hoping it comes back that there is nothing to worry about.

I forgot to also mention that the dr has said her glands in her neck and groin are also swollen, despite not currently having an infection (not that we know of. She's only just finished her antibiotics 6 days ago for her water infection so I wouldn't think they could still be swollen from that?

I just think it’s great that you have a GP who is obviously doing a thorough check. I’m not sure it’s wise to speculate though as it could be anything or nothing.

ohnoohnoo · 06/06/2022 16:53

@LookingForSalt yes you are probably right, it's just hard not to worry now! Hopefully we will get an appt for the blood tests really soon

Poor girl (and you!) that's a lot to go through and a lot of antibiotics.

Has she also had probiotics to build up her immune system after the antibiotics?

ohnoohnoo · 06/06/2022 17:22

@ThisIsM no we haven't tried giving her them but it's something on my list to get this week as somebody mentioned it on my post about her being poorly last week. They are also taking a stool sample to check for c diff because of all the antibiotics she has had
