To not understand the sick voice?

DH does a weak quiet voice when he’s ill and I just don’t get it.

Speak the fuck up man! You’ve got an upset stomach why the fuck are you speaking like that 🙄

Thankfully he doesn’t have a dressing gown.

Mine limps, regardless of the ailment. Headache? Oh I’ll just limp to the medicine cabinet.

The sick voice is the one thing that’s guaranteed to elicit zero sympathy from me.

I know a man who does this too! 🤣🤣

This thread is pretty nasty tbh, referring to people as "it" 🤨

Thinking about it I think it's normal for your voice to change when you're I'll. Mum talks softly when she has a migraine or a flare up of collitis, dad was quiet when he got a really serious case of flu.

One person used “it” and in what looked like a lighthearted post. I think the it was perhaps a typo even.

@Muchtoomuchtodo

Can you not get rid of the saggy tracksuit bottoms? I mean, maybe he won't fall ill then? No trackies, no sickies?

Who has done that?

When people are saying 'it', they are referring to the put on voice, not the person.

it, the voice, is annoying
it is annoying when he does it
it drives me bonkers

the person isn't the it.

Unless I've missed the posts, I did look back but you never know.

DH has caught DS's cold.
DS (14y) battled through pretty well.

DH has Poorly Voice, Limp of doom, and the WOOLY HAT!!
oh and The Cough...
and The Sniffle! 🤒

(DH was ill a couple of weeks ago, when I picked up DS from school he asked if Dad still has the poorly voice. Not just me thats irritated by it then!)

BelperLawnmower · 06/06/2022 14:14

I'm sorry ladies, I work in HR, and take a lot of sick calls. Women are just as bad as the men.

IncompleteSenten · 06/06/2022 14:14

I looked through again. oh heck. was it me? :D

When I said it used to drive me crazy, it was it - the voice, it the behaviour - not it my dad!

my dad used to do this, it (the voice) used to drive me crazy.

LeeMucklowesCurtains · 06/06/2022 14:16

My husband does the sick voice when he’s tired, ffs.

Slow and hoarse and drawling.

I keep telling him that if tiredness affects his speech that terribly, he needs to see a dr.

(he’s not sleep deprived, it’s one of those “my life is harder than anyone else’s and I want to whinge about it and get attention ” type things and I have no time for it).

IssaBaby · 06/06/2022 14:20

*takes notes for when to signal period sympathy from DP

Snowflakes1122 · 06/06/2022 14:22

That would irritate me immensely.

What is he, 6 years old and treating you like his mummy?!

StarTwins · 06/06/2022 14:23

I have to say I do have a slight sick voice when calling the doctors or work - this is because my default phone voice is incredibly upbeat and chirpy (thanks Mrs F for the "speaking on the phone" lessons at school - "always smile, it can be heard over the phone") even if I am really ill. If I don't moderate it when sick I will come off the phone drained and also nobody would ever believe I was ill - but I usually moderate it too much!

Georgeskitchen · 06/06/2022 14:24

The "phoning in sick voice, liberally interspersed with coughing. My OH used to do this..
Then not cough again until the next sick call 😅

IncompleteSenten · 06/06/2022 13:57

my dad used to do that whiny child voice. It used to piss me right off.

He's dead now and I know I'm supposed to say how much I'd love to hear that whiny it 'urrrrrrts voice but fuck it. I'd still slap him.

😂😂😂😂

EverNapping · 06/06/2022 14:26

Well I sure hope none of you are my manager, because if I'm calling in sick I nearly always sound like tired crap.

ThreeonaHill · 06/06/2022 14:26

I have a (female) staff member who always has a croaky voice when she phones in sick, regardless of what the ailment is.

JustFrustrated · 06/06/2022 14:26

In the defence of the joggers - I also do this.

When I feel crap I don't want anything restrictive or against my skin so I opt for joggers/sweat pants

It's comfort, and psychologically it feels better as well.

But then my skin feels sunburnt when I'm ill....

No sick voice for me though.

i Hope the link works - this is referenced a lot in our house when the kids are ill 😂

I think it’s in reference to @TheSpottedZebra saying ‘Why doesn't it have a dressing gown, the poor, poorly man?’ when it’s clearly a joke!

CoalCraft · 06/06/2022 14:01

If I'm feeling very ill I do tend to speak in a quieter voice than normal as I'm feeling weak and don't see the point in wasting energy on speaking loudly. DH does the same. Neither of us do it very often. Just every few years if a nasty bug comes along.

I'd think it's normal? I think I'd feel pretty hurt if I was feeling rotten anyway and then DH got annoyed at me for how I talked

You do the sick voice, which is why you're taking offence. But you're in good company with your bloke so don't stress about it.

Mine has the dressing gown of doom and shuffly slippers. I ask him to do the pokey tongue thing when he does the weak cough though to top it off. Full of sympathy I am.

When he's actually really ill though and looks it so I faff with thermometers and whatnot, he does the I can throw off anything me and does the brave thing. That's more annoying. Just go to bed!

majorquimby · 06/06/2022 14:35

I once had someone phone in sick in a Very Sick Voice saying they had an eye infection and couldn't come in (someone who habitually called in sick and had used every ailment in the book). I commented it must be a very serious eye infection indeed if it had affected their vocal chords and they went completely silent for a moment then started talking normally!

TibetanTerrah · 06/06/2022 14:35

My ex did all of the above (except the hat!), but also when he coughed he would scrunch up his eyes and cough with his tongue out, like a toddler Confused

Gave me the ick immediately.

Oh blimey that was me. Yes, it was autocorrect. I didn't mean to call your poorly husband an it, OP!

But thanks for understanding Blush

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/06/2022 14:37

Do you know what? This thread made me think exactly the same.

The next time i’m going down to the tip, they’re going in the fabric recycling skip!!!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/06/2022 14:38

That was to @Takenoprisoner

I’ve still not got the hang of the updates!

Ahwig · 06/06/2022 14:44

I always found it funny when staff would phone in with their sick voice, why are you whispering in a hoarse voice when you just told me you’ve sprained your ankle, it’s not connected to your voice. On the flip side though I was in hospital having had planned major spinal surgery and I telephoned my boss to confirm that yes the surgery had gone ahead and I was currently an inpatient and would be for at least a week or so. Her first words to me after I gave her this update were, well you don’t sound sick. I did say well it’s my spine they operated on and not my voice but I don’t think she was convinced. She would have felt more concerned had I used the “ sick voice”
