Only women have to wear uniform at workplace

AIBU to think it's unfair?

Women have to wear a horrible patterned, polyester top that's itchy and unflattering, with a company-issued unflattering mid calf length skirt or company issued frumpy trousers.

Men just have to wear trousers of their own choice, a shirt and a tie. So they can choose to wear, say, a cotton shirt rather than polyester, and they get to wear a plain shirt rather than the awful pattern women have to wear.

Feeling really quite pissed off about it.

Is there a union? I'd not be standing for that.

CheshireCats · 05/06/2022 23:10

Where is this?

Danikm151 · 05/06/2022 23:10

I’d be annoyed at this. Cotton is a must especially in the summer months.
has anyone ever questioned the gender divide?

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/06/2022 23:10

Well that's bloody clear sexism. Union?

PineapplePrincess1 · 05/06/2022 23:11

Nope, no union

It's a hotel

What have you done about it so far?

Have you raised it with management? Asked colleagues how they feel about it? Mentioned it to the union if you've got nowhere with management?

Ikeptgoing · 05/06/2022 23:12

That doesn't sound equal opportunity or treatment. If women have to wear a uniform top and male employees don't.
Have you a union?
If not, you can speak to ACAS for advice

worraliberty · 05/06/2022 23:12

Ahh I've just seen you haven't joined a union.

Has anyone else who agrees with you?

Ikeptgoing · 05/06/2022 23:14

Maybe have a look at this webpage, it's the equality and human rights commission and should explain when EO (equal opportunities) have been breached and what redresses and process are three to follow

I think I'd just start wearing the men's uniform without saying anything at all and see what happens.

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/06/2022 23:22

Yep. Identify as a man and wear the mans uniform.

Dh once worked for a place that refused to let men where shorts in the summer, so he ordered a skirt.

WeAreBob · 05/06/2022 23:22

If you don't want to bring it up yourself then join a union. Anyone can join a union. It isn't up to your employer and they don't bring a union in for you to have one on site. Just join a union in your area of work.

Yes, some of the male bus drivers in my town wore skirts in a heat wave after being told not to wear shorts. The policy was changed in a matter of days.

Brefugee · 06/06/2022 03:01

I would wear the man's uniform and see what happened.
Then I'd bring up the discrimination.

Are you in a union? if not why not. If yes, get them involved.

Marty13 · 06/06/2022 03:52

Yep me too, I'd just wear the men's uniform, it sounds way more comfy.

It seems unfair in the other direction as well ie the men don't get free work clothes to wear.

The solution for this might be that the men get a work provided uniform.
