to feel strange a week after surgery?

I had a minor op under GA last Monday, and I feel sort of quivery and lacking in stamina. I thought it could be the painkillers, so I've stopped them, and I think that has helped a bit.
I just want to sit around wrapped in a blanket, and it's frustrating me.

I get this after surgery, from the morphine. It takes me a good four or five days at least to feel it’s all out of my system and to get rid of that slightly off-balance feeling.

I think with the advent of day surgery we all expect that we should be back to normal right away, when in fact we still need to recover from the surgery - we just don’t need three nights in hospital to do it any longer. Listen to your body, rest when you need to, but make sure you move around regularly too. Drink more than you think you need to.

I don't think I had morphine. They would have told me, wouldn't they?

It’s pretty normal, and they give it when you first come round - you may not remember them asking you in recovery if you have any pain, but they do, and if you say yes, they usually give you morphine at that point.

Midazolam always makes me feel like that for about 3/4 days , you may well have had that . If you have another op tell them you don’t want Midazolam just in case .

Is there any chance you could have an infection from the surgery? Might be worth calling out of hours/111 to speak to someone. If it’s not a post op infection some people have really bad reactions to a general anaesthetic and some people develop depression etc at the e extreme end

Perfectly normal after receiving a GA. It took me a month the get it out of my system when I had one. If everything is otherwise okay, there is no need to worry, but do see your doctor if you're at all concerned.

How long were you under GA for? It can take a long time to leave your system.

TaranThePigKeeper · 05/06/2022 21:17

Definitely mention it during your pre-op assessment if there is a next time, in case there’s something they can do differently for you.

It was a fairly short op, so I'd expected to have minimal effects. However I'm noted to be sensitive to meds, so my GP always starts things on the lowest possible dose.
I looked up Midazolam, and that looks like the sort of drug I've had problems with in the past, so it could be that taking a long time to work through. Perhaps my expectations of myself are a bit high too, and I'm still worried as even after surgery the consultant couldn't tell me what it was that he removed.
