To be worried about these little bruises?

My DC has some tiny bruises on his chest / abdomen area, only a few and they're no more than 4mm wide. V strange place and shape for a bruise. He started with one earlier in the week, and now has 4. No known health issues that would case it and while he often has bruises on legs from football etc he's never had them in this place before. Seems v unusual but maybe there's a standard explanation?

Can you post a pic? Sounds like it's worth seeing a GP.

patchwirk · 05/06/2022 09:01

Phone 111 for advice

ARL0 · 05/06/2022 09:02

He needs to see his GP.

WooNoodle · 05/06/2022 09:03

Go to the GP. They'll probably do a blood test.

Hi OP, first off, please don’t google! You’ll see all sorts of horrible things and get in a pickle.
A few years ago one of sons developed bruises. Small and large ones, and as you say, unusual ones in unusual places. DH googled and went to pieces. Anyway, I’m a nurse so unless your head is falling off I’m a hard nut. I knew my son was well enough that it wasn’t seriously serious. Rang a medical friend who said go to A&E in morning. We did. They did blood tests and it came back that he had a platelet count of zero!! He had a thing called ITP here.
My son had a bad 24hr bug about 3/4 months before, than a week later had an usual rash, I’d thought maybe chicken pox but it wasn’t and it went away-now know it was a post viral rash. The whole thing triggered some immune response.
Anyway, he was fine! Had a finger prick blood test every few weeks and over time the levels came back up. Hasn’t bothered him since.
Bit of a long story, but the gist is it could be that? Has he any other symptoms?

JollyJunee · 05/06/2022 09:12

Should have said also, I’m always aware now if he has many bruises. The other day he had seven, but most disappeared over the next 24/48 hrs. His bruises were small, like a finger print size, to larger ones, which were unusual in appearance. A hard centre, then spreading out.

Agree with PP, worth getting a blood test. Sometimes children get acute ITP, which resolves on its own. ITP sounds more scary than it is; I've had it for 27 years now.

JollyJunee · 05/06/2022 09:20

Not sure that previous link was any good, try this this one. DS had acute ITP.

Tigofigo · 05/06/2022 09:30

Thanks all, no other symptoms - although has seemed tired on and off for a few weeks. He's had a v busy time though and we're currently on holiday and he's had more than enough energy to swim, walk, kick a ball etc A couple of weeks ago he had a nasty cough with wheezing caused by a viral infection.

We're back in UK next week so will call GP on our return... Although wait for an appt is usually weeks, is this urgent if it is ITP?

I've just checked him over,he has 7/8 bruises on his legs but most are fading, but also has quite an unusual one on a soft inner part of his foot

It was the area of the bruises that I noticed, OP. Tips of his fingers, think from holding pencil? As you say the one on inner foot, unusual place for bruise.
If GP is going to be ages, just go to A&E, that’s what we were advised to do.

AuntSallly · 05/06/2022 09:53

Definitely see your GP and insist on a blood test for anaemia which can cause this type of bruising (and vit B12 deficiency)

Tigofigo · 05/06/2022 12:38

Hmm he's been drawing a lot and no bruises on fingers

He has been anaemic before so will ask to get this checked. Thanks
