I get horrific hay fever in June, especially my eyes which get so itchy and swollen I can’t even open them some days. I’m on fexofenadine and doc has prescribed a different nasal spray this year but the Nedocromil eye drops that were the only ones that kinda worked have been discontinued. Can anyone recommend some alternatives that actually work?

I take loratadine in the morning, fexofenadine in the evening and use a steroid nasal spray one puff each nostril morning and evening. That just about keeps a lid on things.

GP and dermatologist recommended double ending with different tablets as above. One of my other side effects is heat lumps all over my face which then break out into eczema.

My contact lenses mean I don't have terrible eyes as they seem to block lots of the pollen.

Good luck.

Have you tried a netty pot? It cleans your sinuses and helps. Also I have just been to the opticians because I have dry eyes and she recommended Hycosan night. It's not for hayfever it's for dry eyes but I have noticed a huge difference to my hayfever eyes. It coats your eyes overnight and keeps them moist and soothed overnight. Might help

Looks like these eye drops are still available? Are you on a regular steroid nasal spray such as beconase (chemists do their own brand which is the same but cheaper) that should help with your eyes as well.

I was exactly the same, it was interfering with my life. I had been taking cetirizine for so long that when I stopped taking it I had horrific itching as a withdrawal symptom. I took 1 tablet when the itching was at its worst and it stopped. But I had to come off them, searched online and so many others had the same issue.

Eventually I paid private (£75) for the Kenalog injection which works for some but not for others. I thought it was worth a try. Apart from 1 day of some mild itch eyes I haven't had any symptoms since April

curlycat · 03/06/2022 07:49

Not medication but DH is a life long suffererer from April to September and tried everything single thing known to man. About 4 years ago he tried the allergy bands you wear around your elbow and has never looked back.
Look at Qu-Chi acupressure bands

I take chlorphenamine morning, lunch and night when it's really bad. I also use a neti pot with a saline solution once a day, and I use sodium cromlogicate eyedrops. (The latter are a total lifesaver but hurt like a bitch going in). If I need to I use Optres spray for irritated/sore/OMG eyes as well.

FuckingNoise · 03/06/2022 08:17

Also... trim your nose hair if you have any! The pollen won't stick to them then

Brunilde · 03/06/2022 09:37

Hycosan dual eye drops. My optician recommended them and I've found they help a lot.

NeedMoMoney · 03/06/2022 10:20

@hellcatspanglelalala these are prescription only drops, they could try seeing there gp again or go private

Nitgel · 03/06/2022 10:25

Same too I use allergy eye mist and opticrom on top of fexofenadine and otc meds. it seems awful this year fir some reason.

Yarnasaurus · 03/06/2022 10:37

I'm past 🤞🏼 my worst this year as my main trigger is birch but have been on Clenil inhaler, steroid nose spray (Beconase, I tried Dymista as recommended on here but it was no better, possibly less effective than Beconase for me), Opricrom eye drops and 2xCetirizine as a baseline. I've added in Fexo and acrivastine for days when I've had to be outside with no relief, and used Haymax on my nostrils. I carry a water spray or saline wipes to regularly wash my face when I'm outside.

TL;DR attack on multiple levels for best symptom management

Nanny2many · 03/06/2022 10:40

I have mild hay fever but find that if I put eye drop in my eyes and Vaseline in my nose (!) is creates a sort of barrier. Also washing hands and rinsing face when I’ve been outside helps.

gettingfedupagain · 03/06/2022 11:03

Haymax is the best for overall reduction of symptoms by reducing the pollen intake into your nose.

Trimming nasal hairs means that the pollen will get further into your system, making symptoms worse. Nasal hairs are there to stop dust and pollen

andymary · 03/06/2022 12:08

For me it's a combo of:
Cetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets - One a Day (Non-Drowsy and Real Cheap - Poundland do them).
And for a stuffy nose "Vicks Sinex Micromist Decongestant Nasal Spray"
3 pumps in each nostril in the morning before work, and then the same in the afternoon/when I get home after work. This stuff is like magic, costs about £4.

LakieLady · 03/06/2022 12:48

I've heard of no end of people having HF really badly this year, and also several people who've never had it before getting it for the first time. I don't usually get it at this time of year (my triggers are tree pollen and fungal spores, so spring and autumn are my worst times) but mine is the worst it's ever been at the moment. And it's given me a bad attack of sinusitis too.

I normally take Benadryl but I'm now using a nasal spray and sodium cromoglycate eye drops as well, but I'm still suffering badly. I've made an appointment with the GP to see what else I can try, but the earliest available appt is in 3 weeks time, and I suspect the worst will be over by then.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/06/2022 12:59

I'm on Olopatanol eye drops and they seem to work.

Blastoff50 · 03/06/2022 13:20

Thanks for the tips everyone, I’ll look into all of these options and keep everything crossed at least one of them works! Thanks again
