To have assumed this about breakfast?

Staying in a country pub with rooms for a couple of nights away with my dc. We went down for breakfast this morning and the waitress asked if we wanted the continental breakfast for £7.95 or the cooked breakfast for £10.95 (slightly cheaper for dc but can’t remember the price). We all had the cooked breakfast, she took our orders and went off.

I then went to the continental buffet bit and got juice for dc, a cup of tea for myself and 2 slices of toast to go with our cooked breakfast. She delivered the cooked breakfast, it was all very nice and then she presented us with the bill that charged us for 3 x continental breakfast and 3 x cooked breakfast. I said she’d charged us twice and she said that she’d seen me go to the buffet so had to charge me. After a bit of a fuss she agreed to only charge for the cooked breakfast but said to not do it tomorrow and that if I wanted tea/ juice/ toast I had to order it with my breakfast.

I haven’t stayed in that many places that offered a continental and cooked breakfast at a separate price but was I being cheeky to assume the cost of a cooked breakfast included juice and toast from the buffet bit? I’m sure when I’ve stayed in Premier Inn or similar that’s been the case or maybe I’ve just been nicking stuff without realising it 😬

Stayed at a hotel recently breakfast £10 inc full cooked buffet juice /tea/coffee toast, pastries, fruit, yogurt and cereal I would have done the same as yourself I will be honest! Ours was a lovely hotel set in a golf course 30min from Oxford near another nice town .

Now thinking I need to check anytime I book somewhere 🤔

YABU you should have asked first really.
I've noticed many places are like this now, especially the smaller chains, but to be fair the waiting staff should have mentioned this to you when you placed your order. That would have been less embarrassing for you when the bill came.😊

A country pub is not a Premier Inn, you shouldn't have assumed but should have asked about juice, tea etc.

Please tell me the small chains that do this? I don't know any and would want to avoid them!

This is absolute crap! We do loads of overnighters in hotels and have done for many years and we have full breakfasts. We always get toast and juice. We have never ONCE been asked to pay for 2 continental and 2 English breakfasts.

I would have done the same & would have been pretty annoyed by being charged for both breakfasts and questioned it. So with you OP!

No you haven't nicked anything, I have stayed in loads of private hotels and usually you help yourself to juice etc. If those things are not included in the full breakfast price she should have mentioned it when taking your order. Too late now but I would ask the next morning what is included in the full breakfast price. Leave a review on trip advisor if this was stated the next day as well.

Why are people saying the OP should have asked what was included? No! It should be made clear to the customer what is and isn't included. You shouldn't have to ask for your breakfast tea when it's the norm everywhere to include it.
The waitress isn't doing her job properly if she isn't either offering tea and coffee, or inviting the guests to get their own.
Charging for 2 breakfasts sounds like the waitress making rules up on the spot. A cup of tea and some toast isn't a complete second breakfast, and it's the norm for these to be part of a cooked breakfast.
Definitely worth a complaint to the pub. They're part of a chain but seem to have breakfast pricing different from the rest of the chain. And waitresses should be trained properly.

But she ordered the "full" breakfast, what do you think this should've included? No drink? No toast? Really?

We have stayed in several UK hotels where we have had breakfast.
We usually have a Full English and are told to help ourselves to fruit/toast/juice/hot drinks whilst we wait

You'll have to share. I've never been anywhere where the continental is included in the cooked, and I'm assuming cold meats, fruit, pastries, unless its been an all inclusive buffet, take your choice'.

The poor serving girl clearly not up to speed, all it needs is a bit of clarification for future reference. Why does everyone have to complain all the time.

I’d love to know the actual names of these places some posters are claiming don’t include the continental in the cooked price. First because it stinks of bullshit - never have I ever encountered this myself, seems like the majority on here agree too - but secondly so I can avoid, if they actually exist.

When I've stayed somewhere it's either been 1 price for continental or more for a cooked breakfast but that includes the continual stuff such as juices and toast. How odd OP.

Yoghurts, muffins. Oh yum I want a breakfast buffet now.

@DadBodAlready mentioned on this thread have been Premier Inn, Hilton, Holiday Inn, Marton’s Inns (which I was staying at, someone even found a template menu stating the cooked breakfast included the buffet) that offer this. Ive stated in a couple of independent pubs with rooms and hotels over the last couple of years and, after double checking online, the ones that do have the breakfast menu available on the website also say the full breakfast includes the continental.

Everywhere I have stayed and f you pay for cooked breakfast you are also told to help yourself to the continental buffet too. DH doesn’t like a fry up so we get one cooked and one continental usually. This includes 5 star places.

That’s mad. So all the work is on the staff rather than them telling you to help yourself to tea, toast and juice? I’d make a comment on checking out about the stupidity of it.

It's definitely either / or globally unless you have an all inclusive buffet breakfast, you stick to what you pay for! 😉

I genuinely think that some of these 'I've never been to a hotel where the cooked breakfast includes the cold buffet' people have themselves misunderstood, and have been missing out by not taking what they had paid for!
