Whoever mentioned food colouring as a temp hair thing, thank you! Fabulous party/bored day idea, and one wash to get it out sounds great.

Yes it is to young.

When dd1 start at nursery their was a girl who had extention/weave in.

sparklygothkat · 15/01/2008 23:04

Girl up the road has her hair highlighted and last year had extensions put in I normally do the 15 year sister's extensions for her, but when the 8 year old asked me to do hers I said no way...

It is an example of the inappropriate sexualisation of children in our society. I blame Britney Spears

purpleduck · 15/01/2008 23:49

I know a 7yo in Y3 with highlights. Her mum dyes her hair shock blonde, too, so I guess it just seems normal in that household.

The sad thing to me is that the mum is actually an extremely nice person whom I quite like, but she dresses... how to put it? Rather provocatively for the mere school run; like she's trying to prove something which frankly I don't think she should feel the need to prove to anybody. I fear she might be passing on the wrong messages to the DD about not being good enough just as she is.

mistressmiggins · 17/01/2008 20:16

my DP's DD had her hair highlighted last summer - she was 9. Her mum did it on her weekend (DP has custody)
Her hair is really long and it is now growing out & looks awful.
Thankfully she agrees and wont have it done again.

She also comes back from her mother's wearing padded bras

I was shocked cos hadnt seen her for a week & thought she had suddenly sprouted

think her mother acts more like big sister as they just go shopping or to the cinema or watch DVDS (she watched I am Legend the other weekend)

Blondilocks · 18/01/2008 18:33

It's bad enough paying for my highlights let alone someone else's! (DD is 9). Having said that she would prefer to have black hair but she can wait until she can pay for it herself! (Although can see myself maybe giving in for a treat once she's over 16 - not for black though).

The beautician who waxed me last time said loads of 13 yr old girls and older come in for leg waxes, esp if they have dark hair. TBH could understand that as they prob get lots of stick for it at school & shaving is a pain.

smartiejake · 18/01/2008 19:35

I hate all this letting kids dress and appear as adults. I am a teacher it never ceases to amaze me some of the things parents let their kids wear. One girl was laughed at when changing for PE once as she was wearing a thong! She was 10 and not exactly what you would call slim and sylph like!

chankins · 18/01/2008 19:38

Yes far too young - how pointless vain and silly !
What strikes me lately about girls walking home from the senior school near me is how every single one, even the youngest, all have proper hairstyles ! They all look like they have just stepped out of a salon, and paid quite a lot for it too.
When I was that age it was still pony tails and fringes ! Didn't get a proper grown up style til I was about 17 !
I'm sooooo dreading my dds starting senior school !

smartiejake · 18/01/2008 22:24

It costs a bloody fortune for these hairstyles too! dd has short a layered bob and the salons charge £26 for this as they say it takes as long to do as an adult cut. (probably true)Problem is that it takes about half an hour to blow dry with much stress on my part, to get it looking half as good as they do in the hairdressers

nappyaddict · 05/03/2008 19:21

i still got my hair cut for half price up until i was 15 and i had a proper style with layers, had it washed, blow dried and straightened. i would shop around for a hairdresser who will still do it at a children's rate.

Wisteria · 05/03/2008 19:24

Ridiculous.

My 14 yo dd has just been allowed to put a colour under her hair, she also wanted the top highlighting but I just told her she had to wait until the summer for her natural blonde to come back out again. One of her friends has been allowed to bleach her hair since she was 10 and you should see it now.....looks like white straw.

mummynumber2 · 05/03/2008 19:29

It's far too young. My DSD's mother allowed her to bleech some of her hair at about that age. It's a real shame as she's a very pretty girl but now, at the age of 11 she's not happy with how she looks and is constantly wanting to improve/ change her looks. I think it gave her the wrong impression (ie mum thinks my hair looks better a diffrerent colour). Very sad.

nappyaddict · 05/03/2008 19:32

i think i was allowed when i was 12 or 13.

slim22 · 05/03/2008 19:44

way too young.

McDreamy · 05/03/2008 19:44

Far too young

Crunchie · 05/03/2008 19:53

I did mine at 13!! I went away to summer camp a brunette and came back ginger!! - Sun in IRRC

AbbeyA · 05/03/2008 19:55

You are not an old fuddy duddy! Ridiculous for a child that age!

nickytwotimes · 05/03/2008 20:00

YANBU. And at the waxing too!

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 20:00

YES!

DD1 has chesnut brown hair with gold streaks in it, that goes all streaky blond like it's been highlighted in summer.

I'm secretly dying to put lemon on it, but NEVER would.

Crunchie · 05/03/2008 20:06

so tempting isn't it expat!!

My DD has thick dead straight golden hair, it is getting darker and it goes all light in teh summer. I am sure she will get it done , but for now she is only 9

OverMyDeadBody · 05/03/2008 20:09

Far too young to have hair highlighted!

DS's hair is dark blond but goes really light on the top in the summer months, then in the winter months is grows out and it looks like his highlights are growing out, so if anyone sees my DS, please don't judge, it's natural! (Same as my hair too, we definately don't need lemon!)
