To ask PT to do this?

This might be a bit boring for AIBU, but hoping someone can answer.

I had a PT for a few months last year and loved it, but work got hectic and I had to stop.

I want to start the sessions again, but I don't want to do any cardio or HIIT! I do some cardio myself anyway and I hate doing it with the PT who I otherwise love. What I really enjoyed was lifting weights and doing core work. Can I ask the PT to only do that and will I still get results in terms of strength and conditioning, or do I need the HIIT as well?

I had a PT and that’s exactly how we worked. He left me to do my own cardio and he focused on core, strength and a lot of free weights.
just tell your PT that’s what you want. You are paying them.

You’re paying, you can ask for whatever you want. They may advise against it for a number of reasons but ultimately it’s your choice. If they don’t want to train you though that is his/her choice too.

Thanks; that's really useful!

I know how to do cardio, or at least I can manage it on my own. What I need proper instruction and help with is weights and my wobbly core. So for my hour a week, it doesn't make sense to spend it doing cardio

I only do weights with my PT… lower body focus initially as I have a history of knee and ankle problems so wanted to strengthen hip hips etc. I love it!

Of course. I’m working with an online coach now and all my workouts are Resistance training. I also have a step goal and will still do a weekly 5k if I want to and can fit it in.

Ah that's reassuring that a couple of people do this with PTs. It didn't seem weird in my head, as it makes sense to focus on weights in our PT sessions and then I can do cardio under my own steam on other days. But it's good to have that confirmed !

I do a quick cardio warm up before my appointment starts then my pt does an hour of weights. I don’t need help with cardio - I can do that on my own. Pay for what you need help with.

I have a PT and we do strength training with weights/bands plus core training as I have imbalances/weak glutes etc.

We don't ever do cardio as the focus is on fixing issues and improvements which won't be helped with cardio.

However I also do one of his classes one a week - max 6 in a class where we do strength training but also a cardio/strength circuit at the end.

I def wouldn't want to do cardio in my 1 to 1s as its more expensive and I need his expertise with the strength training.

If you are paying I think you can indicate what you want. If they can't accommodate I would looking at finding an alternative

Yes, we also did a quick warm up with some cardio, which I'd obviously be fine with.

I'm definitely going to say I just want to do weights and core. I've I've a spin bike at home and I do dance fitness type classes too, so probably am covered for cardio.

Thanks all!

I’m the same. I do the warm up and cardio in my own time and work on weights with the PT. If I’m training for a race then we might do some boxing which I absolutely LOVE!!!
