Frustrating having to have such a restrictive diet

Since reaching my 30s, I've had to really limit the amount of sugar and refined carbohydrates that I eat as well as the portion size.
I ate half a plain scone earlier as a treat, no butter on it or anything, and felt funny and bloated afterwards.
At work I see women both in their 20s and 30s who are incredibly slim, look to be a size 6-8, (I am a similar size but they have an incredibly slim body type).
They seem to eat whatever they want, helped themselves to scones with cream and jam no problem, white buttery toast, basically every time there are treats brought in they can eat what they like and however much they like.
Sometimes it feels miserable, I eat a cake or chocolate bar once a week as a treat now, that's it. No white carbs, I have to be really careful or I puff up all over.
I know there are worse problems in the world, I'm lucky to be healthy. But it does get a bit frustrating sometimes seeing others so slim but eating whatever they like.
How do others deal with it?

I know my body will thank me for it in the long run, it's healthier. Just a bit frustrating

Well I would if I didn't feel like rubbish after it.

You sound like you have an eating disorder tbh.

richardhammondsgoatee · 01/06/2022 19:11

I deal with it by eating whatever I like 🤷🏻‍♀️

In all seriousness a lot if skinny people I know have very disordered eating and that scone with jam and cream might be the only thing they've eaten all day.

Obviously some people have petite body types as well.

Carbaholic876 · 01/06/2022 19:12

I have an eating disorder because i had to cut our sugar and refined carbs? Ok....

Maybe..
Though I think the ones I've seen are just lucky, see them eating regular meals as well

Have you ever been tested for dairy and gluten intolerances etc? Your reaction sounds unusual so there might be something else going on.

No, but it's a good point. Sounds stupid but how do I get tested, do I arrange a GP appointment?

Perhaps you have an intolerance to wheat or a certain ingredient if you puff up after eating a little serving of it? Have you spoken to a GP about this? Maybe you don't need to suffer OP (as that sounds incredibly frustrating)!

Carbaholic876 · 01/06/2022 19:15

I will definitely speak to a gp.
I thought it was just me getting older to be honest

I deal with it by accepting that being a size 6 is not the be all and end all. It's quite sad that some women think they are only worthy if they take up little to no space.

I am healthy, I am happy, I am attractive to some and ugly to others, I have children, I have a husband, I have friends and family who love me. I have a nice house and a good job. I work hard. I try to be a good person. I enjoy reading, writing, movies, Nintendo and going for walks in the countryside. I enjoy eating healthy foods and I enjoy exercise. I am not defined by my size.

dementedpixie · 01/06/2022 19:18

Maybe try a gluten free scone and see if you get the same reaction

Carbaholic876 · 01/06/2022 19:20

I get that, it's not just about weight though for me, it's feeling bloated, puffy and uncomfortable, my skin, and affects my sleep too.

I was like you before I weals diagnosed with Celiac disease last year.

All the symptoms you just described.

FriedTomatoe · 01/06/2022 19:26

What do you mean by puffing up and what are the actual symptoms? Cutting out whole food groups isn't something that's recommended as it can cause vitamin deficiencies.

Phrenologistsfinger · 01/06/2022 19:28

try cutting out gluten, sounds a lot like an allergy/intolerance to me.

5128gap · 01/06/2022 19:28

A scone will puff a lot of people up. It's the bicarbonate of soda.
Try introducing whole wheat carbs, rice, pasta, bread in small portions and see how you get on.
Your colleagues are either incredibly active or they don't eat that way in the evening. No one eats loads all day every day with average activity and stays very slim.

Bobbins36 · 01/06/2022 19:30

@Carbaholic876 I hear you. One slip up on. Arbs and I go on a sugar binge for like 2 weeks and feel like crap for it. Bloated, fat, stressed. Trying to come to terms with the fact that I just have to not have them at all 😓

JennieLee · 01/06/2022 19:30

It's perfectly possible to eat decently sized meals where rice rather than wheat is the main source of carbohydrate. And to have bananas/dried fruit/chocolate - even crisps - rather than cakes.

All the same I wouldn't cut out wheat without asking your GP to be tested for gluten intolerance.

Have you always had these symptoms though?

What is hard to establish from your posts is whether or not you cut out the stuff from your diet because of these symptoms. Or if you have only had the symptoms since cutting out these things from your diet in an attempt to lose weight.

The first could be a sign of an underlying health condition, the second is probably just your digestive system going WTF after eating it again

Intolerance.

Google 'inflammation' and 'elimination diet'.

Or alternatively if you stop depriving yourself of them you'll probably stop binging on them.

Mariposista · 01/06/2022 19:35

Sorry you are going through this OP. Sounds really miserable. I would definitely see a doctor or a dietitian and look into intolerance testing. At least then you would know what foods are likely to make you feel unwell, and which you can enjoy freely. You are clearly not putting yourself through this because of weight, you are feeling ill after eating certain things.

BakeOffRewatch · 01/06/2022 19:39

GP will tell you to keep a food diary for three months of what you eat and symptoms, so you could start that now. They rely on excluding one thing and see if symptom goes away. I spoke to doctors about my intolerances and wanted a test to prove (at the time wasn’t known but there are groups of people with it now) but dr just said it’ll tell you what you know already very well.
