To go halves on this??

Ok so I have never been in this situation before so really keen to get others view on this. Apologies if it’s long.

we have a Labrador (20 months) who is v placid/affectionate and fairly calm most of the time. He goes to a doggy daycare place once a week where we drop him off and he goes nuts running round for 3 hours. This is one of the few times where he is NOT calm and jumps around when he gets there and he is like a different dog compared to at home.

I went to pick him up today and they told me he smashed a huge window!! They have a coffee shop there and the dogs go in and out of a section covered in stones next to the coffee shop. I had handed him over beforehand so he was with the people who run the place. He managed to kick up some stones that cracked the window and then somehow (I’m not too clear on this next bit) threw himself/jumped up at the window and the whole thing cracked. This window is about 2m x 1m and really thick. I’m astounded…

Anyway they haven’t asked for money directly and when I asked if it would be insured the owner said he’d have to find out. I said let me know and what the excess will be. Who is at fault here and what should I pay if anything?

The other thing is had the glass actually fell out, it could have resulted in serious injury for anyone/any dog in that area. Is this just a really unfortunate accident or what?? Really don’t know what to think??

AIBU to pay something / all or nothing? Generally my dog loves going and we’ve never had an issue but I can see we need to work more on his impulse control too

I wouldn't pay a penny and I'd be looking for a new doggy day care. It's their job to keep the dogs safe and control them so they don't cause damage.

Testina · 01/06/2022 15:37

I don’t understand why you even started to talk about their insurance and excess.
It’s not your responsibility, not your business.
If your dog is behaving within normal range, their problem.
If your dog needs to be trained or is not suitable in temperament for their facilities, their problem to tell you that.

cmac76 · 01/06/2022 15:44

Because initially I felt at fault given my dog caused all that damage. On reflection, and after asking here, I feel differently and can see they have been incompetent. I’m looking elsewhere for daycare now.

I know you were probably shocked & uncomfortable & your mouth probably engaged before your brain, but you were silly to have asked about insurance/excess etc. THEY should have been reassuring you that your dog was ok & it was safety glass & he didn't hit his head etc.

Then I'd have been mentioning a vet check up at their expense.

thus is on THEM , not you or Fido.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 01/06/2022 15:50

100% their responsibility, some dogs get over excited and will run and jump etc it’s expected. Their daycare should be 100% suitable for the animals they care for and I’d be more concerned about the risk to the dogs having glass that can break do easily.
Their insurance should cover it and as you are the one paying for them to look after your dog it’s their responsibility to get it sorted.

CannaeRemember · 01/06/2022 15:50

To echo what everyone has said. This is NOT your responsibility. The daycare people should know how to handle a 20-month old dog. It's not your fault and it's not your dog's fault. I hope your lovely boy is okay.

As for impulse control, that will come with time. I have a 20-month old doggy and he's an idiot at times. But he's learning.

Why was your dog tethered to a radiator?!

Not tethered, it was in her heated kennel and she pulled it off the wall during the night!

Onwards22 · 01/06/2022 16:30

I wouldn’t pay as surely they take insurance out for these purposes.

I do wonder if your dog got hurt if they would have to pay the vets bills though?

Springdaisy · 01/06/2022 16:52

I wouldnt pay anything for this. They should be insured for things like this. And they are lucky nothing happened to your dog.

It's a commercial insurance claim for the day care owners. You were not there, you were not in charge of the dog, they were and hence I'm at a loss to see why you should pay for any of this. If there's a low excess, it would be a lovely gesture to pay for it, but if in offering they then think that you in any way should be financially responsible (UNLESS it says so in your day care contract), I'd be very careful. I would also want proof that it was your dog who caused the damage in that case, given that it doesn't sound as if your dog has any injuries.

Completely agree.

CFers.

hellcatspanglelalala · 01/06/2022 17:46

It's not up to you to be paying anything, he was under their supervision when it happened.

LondonQueen · 01/06/2022 17:57

My dog wouldn't be going back, they clearly can't keep him/her safe.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 01/06/2022 19:01

Why on earth would you pay? It's their business, they had charge of the dog and that's when the incident happened.

A dog can't be blamed because he's a dog. In fact I'd consider going elsewhere as they didn't ensure your dog (that you're paying them to kee safe) was in fact safe.

Cherrysoup · 01/06/2022 19:03

That’s shit dog day care, letting them run round like lunatics. I’d be looking for a dog Walker instead.
