Splitting cost of holiday villa

Flockameanie · 01/06/2022 13:18

ok, not really an AIBU, but here for traffic. And maybe I am BU for not knowing the 'fairest' way to do this.

What would you consider a fair way to split the cost of this holiday accomodation. 3 bedroom villa (2 doubles, 1 twin). Guests are a family of four (2 adults, 2 primary-aged children, who will be occupying a double and the twin) and a single adult (occupying the other double).

Would the single adult paying a third of the rental cost be fair (i.e. based on bedrooms)? Or would it be fairer to divide by 4 or 5 even?

Split by bedrooms is fairest I think.

Thethingswedoforlove · 01/06/2022 13:21

I agree. Split by bedrooms.

PleasantBirthday · 01/06/2022 13:22

Split by bedrooms. Has to be, really. Otherwise the single person is massively subsidising the family.

FieryPitOfMordor · 01/06/2022 13:22

I’d split by bedroom. Probably do a similar split for food as well.

OwlinaTree · 01/06/2022 13:26

I'd spilt by 3, but I'd spilt food 4 ways.

FieryPitOfMordor · 01/06/2022 13:28

Yes, actually I agree with @OwlinaTree - I’d missed there were 3 adults in total rather than 2

AnathemaPulsifer · 01/06/2022 13:29

Villa by bedrooms, food per person and kids count as 0.5.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/06/2022 13:43

By room.

caringcarer · 01/06/2022 13:46

Single person should pay 1/3 of rental as having 1/3 of rooms. Food split into quarters as 2 kids count as 1 adult. I think that is fair providing all adults drinking similar amounts of alcohol.

Appleblum · 01/06/2022 13:57

Split by bedrooms

LeroyJenkinssss · 01/06/2022 14:02

Split by bedrooms definitely. Food as above with kids counting as half or each pay their own as and when if eating out.

Flockameanie · 01/06/2022 14:05

Great - thanks all. That’s what I was thinking too (split by room) so I’m glad that seems fair

Accommodation: split by bedroom

Food & soft drinks: split by people with the 2 DCs counting as 1

Alcoholic drinks: split by adults

OwlinaTree · 01/06/2022 13:26

I'd spilt by 3, but I'd spilt food 4 ways.

Which child won't be eating? There are 5 people, food split 5 ways, my primary aged grandchildren have hollow legs!

ClaudiaWankleman · 01/06/2022 14:41

Food should be split by 5 - children are normally more particular than adults are, so they cost just as much as an adult. Alcohol should be excluded and each adult should pay their way.

Meraas · 01/06/2022 14:44

Split by room. Family get the best room and worst room (twin), single gets the middling room.
Food, excluding alcohol, I'd split by person, but with the children counting as 0.5 (so effectively split by 4). Alcohol bought by individuals who wish to drink it.

motogirl · 01/06/2022 15:16

Split by room so 3, then food by person but count the children as 1 so divided by 4

Why do the family automatically get the best room?!?

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 01/06/2022 15:19

Count the children as one adult and split by four. Otherwise it’s essentially ‘kids go free’.

momtoboys · 01/06/2022 15:20

We travel every spring to the beach with a friend and we split the accommodations. We do it by bedrooms.

standoctor · 01/06/2022 15:27

bedroom
food x 5

Because they get the worst room as well and it evens out?

One other possible factor is bathrooms though. If the 'best room' has its own bathroom it would probably be sensible to give that to the single person. Not sure how you would calculate a fair split in that case.

Hwory · 02/06/2022 05:49

How is a twin the worst room if you specifically need that room with two kids?

if the ‘best’ room had an en-suite and the others share a family bathroom it makes no sense for the single to share a bathroom with the kids.

Just because their paying more (you know for the amount of bedrooms they actually need) doesn’t mean they actually get to have the ‘best’ of everything. It needs to make sense.

If the third room is tiny should it really have the same value though? I totally agree that if the best room has its own ensuite the single person should get it, but would getting half the bathrooms alter their split of costs?

We (2 adults plus one child) may take a holiday with a either a couple or a single person where we intend to rent a 3 bed (one with ensuite) house. If we go with the couple they will get the room with the ensuite and I know will insist on splitting equally the cost. If though we go with the single person they still should get the main bedroom with ensuite, but I am very unsure what would be a fair split of costs.
