Friend was apparently overpaid

My friend started a new job a month ago so just received her first proper monthly wage but they are claiming to have paid bet twice. She’s been checking her bank account every 5 minutes but she can only see one payment. They are adamant she received an extra one (totally their fault they have stated) but she says she hasn’t. What can she do? Can they forcefully take money from her account? I’ve told her to speak to ACAS but she won’t hear back for a while and is getting really upset over it

She can blank out the other transactions , just leave the amounts so they can see anything credited is not from them

They only need to see what's going in, not whats coming out - she can redact everything that's going out

One month all our tax got worked out wrong. They never told us and the next month we were all underpaid. We only found out why when they asked so yes they can deduct it.

Sorry didn't read properly well if she has only received it once then surely they can't.

Irishfarmer · 31/05/2022 21:27

No they can't take money out of her account.

I've worked in payroll, if an employee told me they had not been paid twice I would go back through my bank transactions to see if I made a mistake. If it still looked like 2 payments went to Sarah Ryan I would request bank confirms from my bank to trace where the payments went.

Basically it's payrolls problem and they can sort it out/ prove she did get it twice.

LoveActually89 · 31/05/2022 21:29

What does her payslip say?

Surely she can just get a statement from the bank confirming only one payment was made by her employer?

That would be far too easy!

SarahSissions · 31/05/2022 22:16

They can’t take money out of her account, but if it’s a new job she probably wants to come across as helpful and not be obstructive. I’d print out a bank statement for the payment week and black marker the retailers and just leave the amounts and dates. Do it proactively and then ask them to investigate from their side

Herejustforthisone · 31/05/2022 22:48

I’m not sure I understand her reticence to download/screengrab an image of her statement, showing only incoming payments? It would entirely solve her problem…?

No - taking a deduction from your NEXT pay is very different to being able to take any amount back from your actual bank account.

I suggested a print out of her statement but as others have said she feels it’s an invasion of her privacy as they could see other transactions.

How would they be able to prove it was paid twice @DogWithMyOwnRoom ?

Very easy for their payroll/finance team - they will know how to do it if she asks them to.

Various different ways (depending on which bank, BACS transfer method etc) but trust me - after doing this for over 25 years - it is not hard. The onus is on the company to prove it happened. It’s very hard to ‘prove a negative’ ….

I do agree though that redacting information on her statement will do almost the same job - but they could always claim that she has hidden/filtered what she doesn’t want seen.

They made the error - and it is very easy for them to fix.

@ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor
hope your friend is reassured and her company is sorting it out?

Notfatundertall · 02/06/2022 06:14

I bank with barclays and can search using say a company name for all transactions.

Could she do thus then there is no need to redact anything. You can't filter anything out so it should show every transaction including date and value?

I know she shouldn't have to but it may be the quickest way to solve it.
